Fabulous Eleven in a league all of their own - Haji Jaffer

LIVING UP TO HER NAME

Bred at National Stud and Foaled in England. Sun Chariot raced in the colours if King George VI. Together with Big Game, the english ruler had two horses of merit and both of them did justice to the Royal Colours.

A Daughter of Hyperion, Sun Chariot was temperamental to the point of distraction. Fred Darling, a trainer of rare distinction, took care of the animal and produced results. Gordon Ricards partnered the filly and when he was not available, the trainer employed the services of Harry Wragg "The Head Waiter".

The animal won the Triple Crown , the 1000 Guineas, The Oaks and St.Leger.

The running of the Oaks has a special meaning where Sun Chariot was a participant. To start with, she ruined three starts before the field eventually took off.

She darted off to the left as the barrier was released. The animal lost precious ground. The field had gone a good furlong before Gordon Richards could induce her to move.

The story was best narrated by the champion jockey himself. The disappointed on the face of the King could not be missed. And suddenly as the field had nearly gone a mile, came Sun Chariot with a devastating run. She started threading her way through the field. One could Perhaps compare this to the run of Dancing Brave avenging defeat on Shaharastani owned by the Aga Khan.

At this moment, there appeared to be some degree of hope in the mind of the jockey.

The crowd was shouting like mad. Sun Chariot in a jiffy demolished all opposition and reached the winning post, a clear length ahead of the others. The finish was breathtaking for the crowd and breathtaking for words.

The following year, the king presented Gordon with a Munning’s painting of Sun Chariot with Gordon up, a priceless treasure yearned for by the greatest in the business.

And yet, Sun Chariot is a reserve in the 'Fabulous Eleven'. This is purely subjective .

You may differ if you choose to. So what!
