Foaled in
1874 and trained in Hungary, Kincsem has done the country proud as never
before or after. Hungary has not produced any horse close to Kinscem.
Kinscem
began her career in Hungary and won 27 races in her first two seasons
included in which were Hungarian 2000 guineas and Oaks and the Austrian
2000 guineas and the Derby.
The owner
of Kinscem decided on a large horizon for the mare and brought her to
England. a big lengthy filly, rather unkindly referred to as 'long as a
boat' she ran remarkably well on the English soil.
She
won the Goodwood Cup in a magnificent manner and earned the esteem of the
local crowds.
She became an
international traveller, going to France and then to Germany. She
went from strength to strength and collected races as if it was her hobby
and a habit to do so.
She was finally
retired, the unbeaten winner of a whopping 54 races from 5 furlongs to
2-1/2 miles. She was also a gallant weight carrier shouldering upto 12
stones 11 lbs. What better testimony, if testimony is required.
To
express gratitude and regard, a bronze statue of Kinscem has been erected
in the Newmarket Horseracing Museum. A set of stamps in memory of Kinscem
were released in Hungary. The animal deserved all these and much more.
