BECKET - Can he take the pressure?

BECKET b C 2006 DP; 8-5-12-1-0 (26) DI: 2.71 CD: 0.27 by Hawk Wing - Boiling River, by Dayjur - Burning river,  by Riverman - Prospectors Fire, Mr. Prospector - Native Street, by Native Dancer.

Inbred 3S x 4D x 4d to Mr. Prospector (Raise A native) through his son Woodman and daughters Gold Beauty and Prospectors Fire, 5s x 4D to Northern Dancer, linebred 5S x 7s x 6D x 6D x 6d x 5d to Native Dancer His pedigree also boast of 6 crosses of Nasrullah in the 6th and 7th generation.

The main concern here is the multiple duplication of Mr. Prospector – Raise A Native - Native Dancer lines in both sides of the pedigree.

His pedigree is similar to that of the ill-fated filly Eight Belles who broke down after crossing the finish line in the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Eight Belles has only 2 crosses of Mr. Prospector, 3 of Raise A Native and 4 of Native Dancer. Native Dancer has to retire at stud at the age of 4 due to chronic inflammation in his ankles; he developed osselets, bony growth along his ankles. His son, Raise A Native, also broke down and went off to stud and his grandson, Mr prospector, was also unsound. Even Northern Dancer, has got bad knees.

One of India’s top sire, Placerville, son of Mr. Prospector, one of  only two 3 years old winner of Prince Of Wales S. (Eng. G2) suffered a saucer fracture and was sold to the Poonawallas immediately after winning that prestigious race.

Let us hope BECKET is made of tougher genes. He seemed to have come out of the derby in good condition. I wish him and the connections all the luck in this coming Invitation Cup, although it will be a tall order for him, to beat his conqueror JACQUELINE.
