Inbreeding: Sword and Balance
Inbreeding is an integral part of thoroughbred breeding. For successful racetrack performance & better produce, right amount of inbreeding is needed. Inbreeding can produce the desired traits from the genetic pool or undesired traits can be compounded. Breeders should know the amount of inbreeding involved in their produce. As Indian thoroughbred industry is growing, imports of broodmares is on the rise. Right amount of inbreeding while making mating choices will result in better produce. With this perspective we have analyzed Indian derby winners.
We have used six generation coefficient of Inbreeding given in percentage. 1943 onwards Indian derby winners were taken into consideration, plus Triple Crown winners, champions. The data is given below. Interpretation of the data may vary with individuals.
For us Inbreeding can be summarized as Tarot Card Justice Card. The picture of tarot card shows a Woman is seated in the robes of judge. In the left hand she holds the scales evenly balanced and in the right hand she holds Sword uplifted. She represents impartiality of heaven. Correct judgment, comparison, Balance of forces, Rewards and punishments.
First Indian Derby winners of last 12 years are given. Then with 10 years span, Triple Crown winners, probable Indian derby runners for 2011.
More than 61 % winners have six Generation Coefficient of Inbreeding less than 1; about 25 % winners are in the range of 1 to 2. From this we can conclude that For Indian Derby winner less inbreeding is desirable. Two back to back derby winners of Glory of Dancer have 0.49%. Triple Crown winners in the last 15 year have the same ratio Indictment with 0.70%, Smart Chieftan is even less 0.32%
Two biggest upsets of the derby have percentage more than 1, Set Alight 2.02% Mystical 1.80%.
Interestingly both Jacqueline and Set Alight were not able to run Indian St.ledger with Coefficient of inbreeding more than 2.02%
Moonlight Romance, Ocean & Beyond, Xisca, Alice Springs who have won graded races for 2000 mtrs have very high Coefficient of Inbreeding. The case of Alice Springs will be interesting as she is full sister to 2005 Indian Derby winner Southern Regent with high 4.01% which is an exception. Sun Kingdom with 0.34% perfectly fits with the profile. If he is able to reproduce the form shown in Colts trial stakes will be hard to beat. Foreign Exchange will probably be late entry with new trainer also within the range.

Along with conventional breeding theories I have unique perspective which is astrological. Match making is an integral part of Hindu Astrology.
Conventional wisdom for matchmaking was for betterment of the society. Better progeny, Harmonious married life. Certain Nashkatras were avoided; certain planetary combinations were classified as good/bad as results were there to see. Aslesha nakshtra good for continuing heredity traits. Can be effectively utilized for producing better breeds. Mangli Kundali (Mars) very much abused by Indian astrologers was basically a tool to understand synergy of Man and Woman. I request all the breeders, trainers to give their valuable comments on this.
