A glory brought to Kunigal stud By Borsalino

It was awesome and glorious to look at the way Borsalino won handsomely the Kingfisher Bangalore Derby at the testing underfoot condition.

No wonder the son of Choisir out of Running Flame hacked the field in a fashionable way due to perfect conditioning by the famed trainer Padmanabhan. It defied the pedigree analysis’s notion about the staying ability and the nationwide tipsters and even the breeders I would say.

Well, as a racing patron you might have gone through opinions from various quarters and analysis from the experts and from commercial tipsters longing to tip a high priced winner in this prestigious event. But alas! None among the experts showed guts in pointing this horse as a cinch I would recall from my memories when Fantabulous king won a derby bred by the same stud as a long shot in the same track condition belied the suspicion that Burden of Proof may not stay the trip. To every one’s surprise Pesi Shroff rode Fantabulous King in the middle of the track to a fantastic victory. Again the moot point I would like to bring to your attention is how well you are conditioned to take on the opponents matter more than the bloodline aspect is proven more than once in the same track.

This time majority of the punters ignored (including this author) Borsalino due to a jockey factor rather than a trainer factor. If you look at the statistics and career graph of this young lad who rode winner mostly he picked up winners in average purse amount allotted to handicap races in India. What perplexed the punters or bettors on this horse was the trainer’s strategy of asking a rider fly from England for a ride of less purse value than Derby. Surely and most of the punters would agree this is a distraction on selecting this horse as a winner is my opinion right or wrong is secondary.

The third distracting factor, a leading breeder has a choice to retain some of the best yearlings from his own stud especially when they own a quite a large number of good horses but not this gem of a horse also made most of the racing patrons to re-think whether this horse is worthy to be considered for this thick purse.

Looking at the way this horse has won a field of certain worthiness is a pointer many more laurels are in store for this colt, owners and the breeders.
