Mayson

Jockey Paul Hanagnan piloted Richard Fahey trained Mayson to victory in the G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket. This was the first Group 1 win in Britan for both Hanagnan and Fahey.  The weather conditions were appalling and the ground was heavy. Mayson got to the lead in the middle immediately after jumping out from the gates as the field separated into three. The 20-1 Mayson displayed speed in abundance and stretched clear in the last furlong to win by five lengths. The Cheka tried to bridge the gap but could not extra and finished second, a length in front of Society Rock.

"He jumped so good and I didn't really want to take him back, because I knew if he kept going he would take the beating, said jockey Paul Hanagan after piloting his first British Group 1 winner. “ I didn't mess about, but he was really enjoying himself in front and pricking his ears," he added. "He wasn't running with the choke out and the big plus was he really loved the ground. I've been champion jockey twice, but I've waited a long time for this Group 1.
