TRAINER
Padmanabhan had reason to look
back on the races held over the last week-end with a great deal of
satisfaction. Two of his wards, Accrual and Andreyev were outstanding
performers in their respective races and they are sure to be in
classic contention in the near future. Andreyev could well
figure in the Kingfisher Derby reckoning to be held next month while
Accrual who will next race in the Dashmesh Stud Million, will be a force
to reckon with, in the winter classsics.
Jockey Aslam Kader perhaps did not think too
highly of Andreyev as he chose to ride Analogy in the 1600 metres
Parlakimedi Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 35. Jim Foley's Bold
Chieftan who had recorded a thumping win in his last outing, was the
betting rage, with Andreyev available at nourishing odds.
Aslam Kader came a cropper at around the mile
marker even as Boski Dream set a scorching pace. The serious contenders
in the race moved up at around the 700 metres marker but Shroff ran into
trouble at this point as his saddle shifted back. Shroff brought
Andreyev round the field and as the saddle had shifted, he could not
ride out the horse. Andreyev momentarily went in which caused a check to
Altazano who in turn passed it on to Bold Chieftan. Despite no
appreciable assistance from the saddle, Andreyev cruised away to a
comfortable win by over three lengths over Earl Grey and Altazano, with
Bold Chieftan finishing a poor fourth. Andreyev clocked a timing
of 1 minute 55.88 seconds and considering the fact that Shroff did not
ride out his mount and the horse did everything on its own, the timing
must be considered very good as it was only frationally slower than that
clocked by Bonzer in the Justice Cup which was one minute 54.1 seconds,
carrying an identical weight on his back. Bonzer was fully ridden out to
clock this timing.
Since Andreyev is bred to stay, he is sure to have
a decisive in the winter Derby. Though for the moment Six Speed, Allaire
and Allocated are slightly better, should these horse fail to stay the
extended trips, Andreyev will trouble them.
Darius Byramji trained Allaire who missed the
Fillies Trial Stakes due to a minor setback, came back with a brilliant
win in the 1600 metres Nandi Hills Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to
45. Allaire justified the strong support in the betting ring, with a
comfortable win over Sterling Fantasy who ran above expectations. By
virtue of this facile win, Allaire should be in the thick of things in
the Bangalore Derby. Daggers Drawn who was expected to run a prominent
race, was a disappointing third while Among Men, another of the market
fancies, was a dismal fourth and is surely out of depth in the company
of Bangalore horses. Aslam Kader thinks that Allaire has the ability to
halt the progress of Six Speed.
The Justice Cup, a rich terms race for four-year
olds and over, is always known to provide exciting finishes.
However this time out, with Congratulations running way below
expectations, Bonzer made it quite comfortably in the end. Jockey Shroff
had to ride out the Green Forest's progeny Bonzer and the excessive use
of the whip saw him being fined Rs 1,000 by the Stipes. Mount Rose just
about edged out Carnival Flair for the third spot, with the latter once
again running a mighty race. Congratulations' first run of a season has
always been disappointing and she can be expected to fare better next
time out though she has always proved to be unpredictable.
Al Dente recorded a smashing win in the Maroof
Farah Memorial Plate (Div II), with Saujas finishing a poor second ahead
of Renzino. Saujas received support betting ring on the basis of the
filly's second behind Allaire in her previous run but Al Dente proved
too good, with jockey C Alford who replaced the injured Aslam Kader
having an arm chair ride to victory.
The upper division of the same race was claimed by
Comet Star who with a measure of comfort from Mr Belvedere who came up
with a late bid. State Treasure yet again disappointed finishing third
while the suggestive runner of the race was Brave Dee who took the
fourth spot.Peace Desire who was quietly fancied, finished in the rut.
Mangalorkar's Indian Rocket who was backed to the
exclusion of his rivals in the 1200 metres Commanche Plate, won quite
decisively in the end as Adorer, despite the best efforts of jockey
Aslam Kader, failing to catch up with the front-runner. Padmanabhan
trained Ace Beret who was poorly handled by jockey Ravinder Singh, was
an eye-catching fourth. Ravinder Singh was stood down for eight days for
unsastisfactory riding.
Puttanna trained Chitty Bang who had flattered to
decieve in the past, was seen in different light in the Bergamo Plate,
winning in tremendous fashion, with a start to finish attempt.
Favourite Forestry was a faraway second, with Living Together, a
surprise third. Volcano was surprisingly off colour while Auric Royal
who was one of the fancies, was not sighted.
Dynamic Gamble's loss in the Bukit Timah Plate was
entirely due to the inept handling by apprentice Shelar. He failed to
position his mount advantageously and in the run in for home, he failed
to pack punch. With the result, Scandal Sheet profitted to provide Mrs
Silva Storai a narrow win. Essential Elegance was second ahead of
Dynamic Gamble in a three-horse close finish.
SATURDAY's
races saw the emergence of a classic hopeful in the form of Accrual. The
well bred full sister to the celebrated Wandering Star, Accrual made a
smashing winning debut in the upper division of the Tippu Sultan Cup, a
terms race for maiden three-year olds. Darius Byramji's Chevalier was
strongly fancied to win but was a poor fourth. Accrual, after running a
prominent third or fourth, surged ahead of Prince Shazaan inside the
final 300 metres to record a facile win. Much will be heard of Accrual
and her performance in the Dashmesh Million, later in the season, will
be of tremendous interest. Make a note of Prince Shazaan who was a good
second ahead of Great Eastern.
The lower division of the race saw Smart
Chieftan's full sister Star Fantasy record an impressive win. Star
Fantasy who had run unplaced in her only run at Chennai, won quite well
but she is definitely not in the same league as her illustrious full
brother Smart Chieftan. Way To the Stars was a late-finishing second.
The day's feature event, the Civil Service Cup, a
race for horses rated 40 and above, saw a big upset in the form of
Bengal Lancer winning all by himself with no appreciable support from
jockey Faisal Ismail. Neglected in the betting ring despite being
the best performed horse in the field due to lack of current form,
Bengal Lancer came through with a powerful run inside the final 250
metres and held on to win from Own Legacy who found foot late.
Devonlock was a close third while fancied Blue Ridge ran a poor
fourth. Stariano ran below expectations considering the fact that he was
the best placed horse in the fray.
The first leg of the jackpot saw a big upset in
the form of Mangalorkar's Self Esteem winning with a measure of comfort
while the two market fancies, Burning Bright and Wonderful Babe, not
being in the hunt at any stage of the race. Mayfair was a good
secod ahead of Emmenbrucke while Prime Target was finishing on when the
race was practically over. Wonderful Babe has time and again proved to
be unreliable.
The Camineto Plate, a race for maiden three year
olds, was run in two divisions. The lower division of the race which
started the day's proceedings, saw Altdorfer who was running over a
suitable trip of 1100 metres, win unfancied. Fancied runners Coral Bird
and Suhasini failed to make an impression while Spice of Life who
was surprisingly fancied over a trip not suitable for him, ran on to
take the third spot. The upper division of the same race saw favourite
Absolute Hit lose out close home to Soviet Song, full sister to the well
performed Stately Don.
Jim Foley's Astronomer showed a complete reversal
of form, with a big win over the opposition in the 1400 metres Ramkirpal
Plate, a race for horses rated 10 to 25. The Alnasr Alwasheek progeny
Astronomer won as he liked, leaving the field cold
inside the final 300 metres. Silver Toy arrived late on the scene to be
third ahead of Tierrce.
A good piece of riding by jockey Aslam Kader saw
Power Extreme win at the expense of M P Mahesh's Touchin Heights. Jockey
Rakesh, at a crucial point of the race, surprisingly elected to make a
run on the wide outside while there was an opening along the rails. When
the front runners shifted out, Rakesh had to go even wide. Aslam
Kader slipped Power Extreme through the rails and it made a difference
to the outcome of the race.
