Appeasing
has made swift progress en route to advertising her potential to be a
frontline contender for the Bangalore Oaks. The daughter of Razeen out
of Perpetual, Appeasing recorded a convincing win over her opponents
despite being denied of a clear run at a crucial stage in the 1600
metres Rohini Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 90, the feature event
of riot-marred Friday’s races. Appeasing effectively thwarted the bid of
Fabulous Emperor and Carra Mia in a close finish. Carra Mia, who was
running after winning twice during the Bangalore Summer Season, had gone
into the race with the benefit of two mock races but nevertheless she
has also scope for improvement going by the quality of wins registered
in the past. She had lost condition in the intervening period and took
quite some time before she could regain her sparkle.
Fabulous Emperor and Carra Mia who raced ahead of Appeasing, in a handy
position upfront, surged ahead on turning for home and established what
looked like a useful lead. Appeasing in the meanwhile was hemmed up for
room but after being switched out, she came up with a big run to surge
past the battling duo close home. Appeasing who is bred to stay, should
relish the extended trip of Oaks and should make her mark in the longer
classic. Fabulous Emperor, who ran a good race after winning during the
summer season, seems to have recovered from the ill-effects of being a
pace-maker for his more illustrious stablemates.
Woman In Charge went into the Parfait Amour Plate (Div I) as a firm
favourite but there was also strong support for Firefox. Woman In Charge
failed to squeeze herself along the rails after a good getaway and then
dropped back to the rear and finished poorly. Ghostofachance who bolted
to the front tired out in the shadow of the past as Fire Fox gained
momentum to get the nod in the dying moments of the race. Secret Wish
ran a good forward race and the daughter of Burden of Proof who has
disappointed thus far, can be trusted to make amends. Anchoret came up
with a powerful run in the final furlong to win the lower division of
the race from Great Chieftan who once again let down his supporters who
over estimated his potential.
Secret Song, who had the benefit of a race run, slammed the opposition
without much ado in the 1100 metres Dharwar Plate, a race for maiden
two-year olds. Raffaello should strip fit after finishing second best
while Stylish Bay who was sluggish at the start ran on from behind to be
a suggestive third.
Kilspindie battled resolutely to win from Famous For Free in the 1200
metres Honnavar Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 30. The victory of
Kilspindie came as a big blow to Stewards who had let off jockey Vijayan
after he was suspended for three months by the Mysore Race Club
Stewards. The Stewards perhaps showed annoyance at their own decision by
slapping a fine of Rs 10,000 on trainer Dominic for giving misleading
evidence after having accepted all his explanations earlier!
The jockeys of Our Warrior and Fairytaleending rode a poor race in the
1800 metres A R Keshava Mudaliar Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated
40 to 70, by keeping their mounts too far behind. Charlie Brown who ran
a handy second, burst into a decisive lead on turning for home and both
the market fancies could not cover up the leeway. The poor effort of
jockey C Alford and B Prakash on these two horses was carried forward to
the Bugs Bunny Cup which resulted in riots at the Bangalore Turf Club. Alford failed to pack punch on Appoint who had a big lead over his
rivals and relaxed too long till passed by long shot Hindalgo while
Prakash on Simply Spectacular, after receiving an interference at the
start, was not too keen to be in the race. The last race of the day had
to be cancelled as the punters showed their resentment over the turn of
events by resorting to violence.
