Gold Buck returns a surprise winner
By Aalibaba

If anyone who deserves credit for Gold Buck's brilliant victory in the Eastern Command Cup, it is trainer Harvinder Singh Bath. The gutsy schooler possesses two qualities which have helped him survive in the local circuit, with a very moderate string of horses. One, he believes in cashing in on the first opportunity coming his way, whatever odds offered on his horses. Two, he is never scared of taking on the reputed owners, trainers and jockeys.

When Gold Buck came in to his folds, Bath was quick to realise the potential of the Tocave Botta-River Princess five-year-old. He let the horse go against Annalee who was already being tipped as a potential winner of the Sprinters' Cup during the Invitational week-end. Gold Buck nearly pulled of a victory and that too at a weight disadvantage of 3-kg. It is another matter that Annalee encountered the traffic problems in the race which she ultimately won with a degree of comfort.

However, on February 15 in the Eastern Command Cup, Gold Buck failed to attract support for the primary reason that the slated trip of 1,400 metres was beyond the compass of the Mumbai-migrant. But, a little adjustment in his style of running paid
rich dividens. Gold Buck won and quite comfortably. His jockey Shanker only needed to be hold him back to enable him to produce his eventual speed. He beat a good field of 10 runners and was seen flying in the last furlong of the race.

If Bath managed to get good odds and notch up a fine victory, Anntari in the Lt. Gen. Jameel Mahmood Memorial Trophy had to bank upon the support of her ownermate, Wandering Warrior, to do a Gold Buck. More importantly, in a touch-and-go game, the quietly fancied at 3's the Malvado-Corniche daughter just about managed to edge out Arco Europa land the trophy. The runner-up, though well penalised for his lower class victory, displayed vast improvement. He could be counted upon to do strike even in the present class. The 7-4 favourite Wander Warrior reamined a mere passenger in the race. The Darius Byramji-trained topweight may do better with more reduction in his handicap.

For Remember Me in the 1,200-metre Brown Wolf Handicap, It did not turn out to be a formality which was widely expected. Yes, the sparingly raced Javed Khan-trained six-year-old lost and was hard-pressed to beat Armila.

Master Bold continued to show improvement. A late starter in his career, the Broto-Relative Secret four-year-old pulled off his third win in five starts sprea over nearly 10 weeks. Ridden off the pace, Master Bold displayed good turn of foot to score far more easily that the recorded verdict of a shade over a length.

All Jade and High Life played spoil-sport in the six-event card. The two outsiders were mainly instrumental in making the jackpot pool go for a toss. While All Jade had come down the class following his forward showings, High Life in his last start, had served notice of his inications soon after changing hand. Incidentally, the two frindless winners scored against hotly fancied Daniel David's wards -- Abstone Queen and Scarlet Raider.
