Chisty, however, cannot be blamed for Red Apache’s failure. The
half-money favourite failed to produce the vital extra when challenged
by the Vijay Singh trained and C.Alford ridden Clockwork.
Alford, returning after a lengthy suspension, first allowed Le Bombo a
three-length lead and then kept Clockwork close on the heels of Red
Apache who took over the running a the top of the final turn. With the
favourite unable to draw away
from the field, a close contest appeared to be a certainty and it
happened so as Clockwork chased down the favourite to win.
The Chisty-Daniel combination began the day with the defeat of their
heavily fancied Majestic Poet in the Highborn Handicap. The 7-10
favourite led from the start but failed to pull on in the final furlong
when challenged by the topweighted Helegonia, a Javed Khan’s trainee
ridden by D.Singh.
In the opener, Singh had guided H.S.Bath’s Satluj to a start-to-finish
victory to win the 1,100m Camlin Handicap. Singh complete his day’s
tally with a fine treble after Bath’s Megillah went kindly for him in
the 2,000m Stand Off Handicap. The jockey had the Serious Spender filly
settled behind a runaway Dancing Storm and easily passed the tiring
leader at the top of the final turn.
Javed’s Olympic Gold simply thrashed the opposition in the Subianca
Handicap. The winner had been absent from the track for a considerable
period but he had impressed in a barrier trial three weeks earlier and
carried that form into the race.Trainer Robin Corner’s Elemental Wish
won the 1,200m Portofino Plate at lucrative odds from Antwan. The winner
was a poor fourth in her previous outing though that run brought her on
a lot. Antwan was an impressive second and he needs to be kept in mind
if he elects to run next week.
