You need to be patient with ladies if you hope for a handsome reward, goes the saying. Bangalore trainer S Ganapathy faithfully followed this dictum in regard to Own Vision to clinch the Golconda Winter Derby Stakes for Dr MAM Ramaswamy at Malakpet on Sunday.

A not so gifted four-year-old from the gold and brown brigade in Bangalore, Own Vision came to Hyderabad along with Red Chief at the beginning of last Monsoon. During her stay here and later in Kolkata, the Razeen – Treasure Land daughter did well among fillies but came a cropper time and again when she matched strides with colts and geldings. For instance, she won the Deccan Bookmakers Fillies Trial Stakes here and the Calcutta Oaks, but fell short of expectations in Derby races at both the centres. In contrast, Red Chief (Razeen – Rhien Jewel) seemed to acquit himself well in big races, finishing second in both Hyderabad and Kolkata Derbys, but failed to deliver in easy
companies.

So, when Ramaswamy’s retained jockey B Prakash opted for Red Chief in the Golconda Derby last Sunday, it was construed as a signal that Red Chief has indeed reached his potential and that he was now ready to deliver. But the stable’s move to draft in Mumbai professional C Rajendra to ride Own Vision gave other indications. One of them was that the filly too has come up well and that she too runs with an equal chance.

The knowledgeable were quick to recall the Bangalore Summer Derby where Rajendra had delivered a coup on Glorious Colours against fancied stable mate Fond Fantasy. Yet, the move did not seem to clear the vision of a majority who plumped for Red Chief and other local horses -- LVR Deshmukh’s Red Orchid, Rafaat Hussain’s Integral and Leo D’Silva’s Annapolis. Own Vision and Imtiaz Sait’s Self Appointed came next on the bookmakers’ odds.

Regal Revolution set a scorching pace for his owner mates Own Vision and Red Chief. While Own Vision maintained a forward position, Red Chief was ridden off the pace. For much of the race, the gold - dark blue colours of AKS Brar appeared prominently as Glide Along, Turbanator, Integral and Lago Maggiore occupied the front row but couldn’t quite take over the running from Regal Revolution.

Quick to realize the futility of keeping Red Orchid under control for far too long, Appu made rapid progress and by the time the field was negotiating the bend, he was up with the front bunch.

Own Vision and Red Orchid swung in to the straight almost together, but Rajendra snatched a little advantage by gaining a couple of lengths at that stage. While these two were fighting at the top of the field, Red Chief found it hard to get past an erratic Annapolis (Suraj Narredu) who had the favourite out of gear by bumping him a couple of times.

With Red Chief out of contention, the focus shifted back to the front. The question on everyone’s mind now was whether it will be Hyderabad’s Red Orchid or Bangalore’s Own Vision. Despite mounting pressure from Red Orchid, Own Vision kicked on well in the last 50 metres to extend her margin to one-and-a-quarter lengths at the post.

Having damaged the favourite’s chances, Annapolis traveled well in the last furlong to snatch third place from Integral. Red Chief finished a faraway fifth, followed by Self Appointed and Regal Revolution.

Own Vision has thus snapped the sequence of local horses winning in classic events, but Red Orchid, Annapolis and Integral have proved that hereafter outstation horses have to fight to win their share of glory.

All the other ten races on the big day went the way of the big race, with not a single favourite obliging punters. Second favourites Gift A Future and Manchester Babe scored emphatic wins in the two divisions of the Gold Commmission Plate 1200 metres for maidens.

KRK Raju set the tone for the day in the third race, Deccan Prince Cup (Div II) 1600, with an upset win with Sugarcane. Taking the cue, Donald Netto struck two back-to-back races with Romancero and Spanish Cruise. Srinagesh (Fashion For Ever), Faisal Hassan (King Challenger) and Srinivas (Mr Bureaucrat and True
Blue) chipped in with their bit to leave the jackpot  pool remain unsolved.

Besides the two maiden winners, the horse to impress the most was Deshmukh-trained Kaiser. The son of Glory Of Dancer came up with a scintillating run in the straight to beat winners in the Godolphin Barb Stakes, the supporting event of the day. Favourite Oxford Don from Bangalore finished last.
