The troika underlined the fact that Hyderabad professionals and their horses are fast catching up with the rest in the country. In fact, the victory of an unfancied horse proved that the local pros and their animals always had the class to take on those from other centers but they were all along victims of their own self-doubt. In the past, only Jaggi Dhariwal had shown the spunk to stand up to outsiders, but today, with Leo D’Silva holding the light, it appears that many young pros are gaining confidence.
Annapolis was the only horse to have traveled the distance (2,400 metres) before the Oaks. Although each of her wins was scored with a certain degree of impunity, Annapolis’ true potential remained a mystery as the opposition she met in all of her runs was nothing extra-ordinary to raise her stock. Added to that, there were quite a few in the ten-horse field who had gone up to 2,000 metres, but of course unlike Annapolis they had only run but not won.
What also made everybody to train their focus on just three contenders – Chilli Girl, Integral and Self Appointed – was their impressive runs in the 1000 Guineas. Although Chilli Girl’s ability to stay another four furlongs came up for doubt after her 1000 Guineas win, Integral appeared well-endowed to stay. Strangely, however, it was Self Appointed who garnered maximum support. She had neither an improved run to show nor had any great track work to back. Yet, she was in great demand in the betting ring.
Integral (Michael Poirier) looked on target right from the flag-off as she remained in contact with her stablemate Glide Along (Samuel Fargeat) who cut the pace. Annapolis stayed with them for a while before Suraj Narredu preferred a midfield position. So did Pesi Shroff with Chilli Girl. Self Appoined (Malesh Narredu) moved up in the back straight to be second for sometime, while Royal Affinity (B Prakash) and Titanium (David Badel) brought up the tail.
Glide Along and Integral remained at the head as the field got ready for the run in. The fight appeared to be between these two Brar-owned fillies. Although they went stride for stride for a furlong or so, there was an apparent lack of steam in both. Even Chilli Girl, who tried to come through the middle, was heavily under the whip. It was at this stage that one noticed Annapolis, who was second from last at the turn, launching her run from the outside. Undoubtedly, she was the one with a lot of fuel left in the tank. In a matter of 100 metres she was up with Integral and the victory was as good as sealed.
“I knew that she would stay and expected a good performance from her,” said Leo after the race. He was all praise for his jockey. “The boy rode a brilliant race. Having partnered her in all her wins this year, he seemed to have got a good idea of her ability. More importantly, he brought the best out of her when he was required to,” added Leo.
That the victory was totally unexpected could be seen from the fact that only one of the three partners of Annapolis, M Rama Krishna Reddy, was at the course to savour the moment. T Venkatram Reddy, a Steward, and Gautam Chand Jain missed the momentous occasion. Self Appointed disappointed, placing sixth, while Chilli Girl straggled to be fourth ahead of Titanium. That they failed despite the winner clocking a poor timing of 2:38.32 seconds says a lot about their class. The timing was three seconds slower than last year’s winner Gisele and eight second slower than Star Of The Crop who had won it in the previous year.
Leo D’Silva’s success should motivate other local professionals to face the outstation challenge in classic events. It should also inspire other horse owners to invest in good bloodlines so that the returns are good not just in terms of cash but also in terms of pride.
The combination of Leo, Suraj and the owners had a great day. They had a treble through Annapolis, Aberlour and Accolade. Aberlour won The Starsky Plate for maidens and Accolade clinched the upper division of the Musical Morn Plate in great style.
In other action, B Prakash rode Regal Revolution and Cool Deal to smashing wins. Appu won in similar fashion on Red Orchid in Category I.
The day also witnessed the biggest upset of the season when Abundance scored from the front in the lower division of the Salarjung Cup 1400m. The four-year-old from Donald Netto’s yard was too hot for her 13 rivals who just couldn’t get up to meet the challenge.
The race was in the eye of a storm what with the odds on the giant display board changing more than two minutes after the race was over or at least three minutes after the last bet was placed. The dividend figures of all the horses including the winner changed just before the result was announced, giving rise to suspicion among patrons that something fishy was
happening in the computer room.
The upper division of the race also threw up an upset winner in Blooming Dale. The four-year-old daughter of Excalibur’s Lake from the yard of Deshmukh scored a fluent come-from-behind win in a 15-horse field.
