With the trainer persistently attempting to earn a winning bracket for his ward and failing each time, it sort of had a negative impact on Bruno Magli. In that, it delayed his win a bit as the rating went up by more than ten points for nothing. To his luck, Bruno Magli kept raising his own bar with each run and lived up to it. And the confirmation that he cannot be denied his due any more came when he gave the speedy Onnu Onnu Onnu a hot chase at level weights in his previous run.
True to that run, Bruno Magli scored a convincing win over in-form youngsters Burjo Fire and Ice Castle in the Banganapalli Cup, a 1200 metres handicap race for Category I horses. Favourite at lucrative odds of 3/1, Bruno Magli tracked stable mate Burjo Fire all the way and stretched out just enough in the last 50 metres for a comfortable 1 ¼ length win. Ice Castle, a sprinter who comes from rear like a stayer, finished well to take the third spot.
Prasad Raju, who is vying for the champion trainer honours with his father KRK Raju and reigning champion Leo D’Silva, had a fruitful day with two more winners – Access Speed and Spacenet. While Access Speed’s win was never in doubt, Spacenet’s turned out to be a well-planned coup.
Another progeny of Conquering Hero, Spacenet’s rating was allowed to drop way below his abilities which could be seen from the easy four-length win he scored over several other four-year-olds in the field.
Almost An Angel became An Angel not just in her name but even in the manner of her running, as she showed in the Affable Plate. The terms of the race were so overwhelmingly in her favour that the three youngsters in the five-horse field – Bombay Sapper, Shakira and Golden Blaze – made no impression on the winner.
Trainer Silvester, who was in the news during monsoon more for substituting for suspended Satheesh than for any great feats, made heads turn on the day by saddling Royal Award to a sensational win in a classy field that included Highway Prospector, Rock Breaker, Santana Row and Dependable. The son of Kly Green exploded the myth that he is bred to sprint by scoring a fighting win in the seven-furlong Dinky Do Plate for first season winners. Highly-rated Highway Prospector, the favourite from Prasad Raju’s yard, went off the board.
Punters had a harrowing experience as three out of the day’s last four races produced upsets, beginning with Royal Hollow Way in the Deccan Bookmakers Trophy (Div II) 1600M. He came up with fluid strides in the straight making a mockery of a bunch of youngsters who appeared to develop cold feet at the all important end. Although beaten, First Task and Actual Grace should come out better from this run.
Habeebullah seems to believe in teaching stayers how to win from the front and sprinters how to score from behind. For, Green Passion ran just like Running Fantasy to win the upper division of the Bookmakers Trophy with smarter timing than Royal Hollow Way. Both she and third-placed Presidency deserve to be backed in their next outings.
Indian Gift’s win in a six-furlong race came as a surprise for many, particularly with two good youngsters in the field, but the way the six-year-old was backed indicated the confidence of his connections. True to their faith, he came up well in the last 100 metres to sail to a comfortable win.
Trainer Yusuf Khan finally broke the duck when Rutherford rode favourite Bigwig to a fine win in the day’s final event, thanks, of course, to Donald Netto. Not only he gave his rider to Yusuf but his horse Ballistic too cooperated by coming too late onto the scene.
