Kanthara, the 10 to 8 on favourite to win the A. C. Ardeshir Trophy, defied her skinny looks as Niall McCullagh powered her to a convincing victory over her twelve rivals. Hawke Bay, the owner-mate of Kanthara but a resident of trainer Vinayak’s barns, set a scorching pace and led all the way till both Samurai Sword and Kanthara joined the issue with him in the home stretch. Malcolm Kharadi astride Samurai Sword was unable to elicit a burst of speed from the Young Senor progeny and succumbed meekly to the onslaught of Kanthara. Hawke Bay stayed on to finish third ahead of Severriano, whose effort may’ve been late but was noteworthy for sure. Self Appointed ran disappointingly to keep herself away from the judges’ board.

The railbirds at Mahalaxmi racecourse keep wanting more from Niall and he has managed to keep them happy. Niall’s power-packed riding was instrumental in the narrow win achieved by favourite Antarctic Zone over Star Wish in the Seth Ramnath Daga Trophy, the supporting event of the day. The runner-up was shaping like a winner close home but the Mansingh Jadhav nursed son of Don’t Forget Me out of Double Wish came with raking strides to foil his rival’s intentions. Our Own Girl ended a fair third ahead of Rosmini, who was carrying a heavy impost of 63-kg on his back. Niall, however, was unable to fashion the success of two other favourites, Real Beauty and Candavega. The former was outpaced as rank-outsider Mehila (Diffident-Alila) showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals.

Presentation ceremony of the A.C. Ardeshir Trophy (Gr 2)

Saeed Shah saddled Dilnawaz (Cruachan-Shifa), ridden by the 5kg-claimer Vikram Walkar, capitalised on the handicap advantage and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The 20 to 1 long shot Rage of Angels appeared all set to cause a major upset when Dilnawaz flared his nostrils as the photo-finish camera swung into action. Caring didn’t have the luck of the race and ended a game third. Caring dropped back to the rear after apprentice Vikram Jodha was dislodged from Gracy and fell in front of Caring during the race. It may be recalled that jockey Yogender Singh had suffered fatal injuries when partnering Dilnawaz at Pune.

The outcome of the second division of the Silver Phantom Trophy appeared to be of academic interest only as Proteus stood head above shoulders over his rivals or so it seemed. The moneybags took a big hit as trainer Vinayak’s protégé failed to overhaul Mysterious Land close home and blotted his career sheet. The Dallas Todywalla saddled filly took charge of the running from the tiring leader Seattle Swan in the straight whilst Proteus was in the process of launching his assault. Inspired in the saddle by Imran Chisty, Mysterious Land waged a grim battle with the favourite and stretched out magnificently in the end to leave the punters in a heap of ruins. Proteus, who had opted out of the Super Mile Trophy run last Sunday, probably found the trip too sharp for his liking as such it would be advisable for the racegoers to ignore his doleful show. However, Shockwave (Alnasr Alwasheek-Shocking), who was the shortest priced runner of the day, gave no anxious moments to all concerned and received a confident ride from apprentice Anil Baandal in her wire-to-wire journey.

Trainer Arti Doctor and jockey Shakti Singh Rathore were associated with the success of Flag Bearer (Diffident-Jacinta) and Early Bird (Don’t Forget Me-Tin Roof), who were carrying top-weight in their respective events. Flag Bearer struck immediately on demotion as kept Super Sword and Helegonia at bay. Don’t Look Twice lost much of his chances at the gates and his late rally could only fetch him a consolation berth. Early Bird snuffed out the bid of Get Fresh, who was being hailed as a winner before he started to loaf and had no option but to surrender before the winner. Speedster won precious stakes for his owners when Zameer Sayyed urged the bottom-weight to hit the front and keep going to win from Dancing Mystery and Eva. Favourite Imperial Thriller was a big let down once again.
