Palazzio leaves her rivals stranded, wins in record time

By Usman Rangila

Palazzio (Placerville-Stately Home) and Rosmini (Diffident-Academy) both sporting the colours of Capt. Jamshed Appoo showed blinding speed when picking up the P. D. Avasia Trophy and the Pratap Stud Million respectively. The Bezan Chenoy- saddled mare Palazzio eclipsed the course record held by Escapade in only her fifth career start. It may be recalled that Escapade, also nurtured by Bezan Chenoy, won the Sprinters’ Cup during the Invitation Cup weekend at Hyderabad in 1993. Palazzio could be on her way to emulate her feat this year.

The day certainly did not belong Jaggy Dhariwal, as his first runner of the day, Cajun King, was withdrawn due to a freak injury. Aslam Kader-ridden Cacophony won the race keeping the erratic Green Star, Weathering and Louis Cyphre at bay. Ill-fate continued to trail Dr Vijay Mallya’s private trainer. Sky Rocket was reportedly found to be in season and became an easy prey for Supreme Chancellor (Placerville-Najidiya). The winner survived a major scare from The Avenger who was the last horse to enter the home stretch. The trainer of The Avenger was quite livid with jockey Chris Lemaire for not having followed his instructions of sitting third or fourth in the initial stages of the race. Only the intervention of the owner of The Avenger prevented Nirad Karanjawala from lodging a complaint against Lemaire.

The day started with Majestic Crown getting a one-way ticket to glory as none of the other contenders appeared serious about their chances. Prabhuti brought home the bacon for her connections with a narrow win over Celtic Son. It was really asking Amber Wine to go against the tide in asking to win after her rider Amyn Merchant was banished by the stewards for handling this mare tenderly in her previous run. The mare obliged her connections by running off the board. Star Cutter was a big let down for his supporters. Condor, who finished sixth in this race, is the one for your notebook.

Flyme To Themoon gave Cooji Katrak his second winner of the day. He had a chance to make it a lucrative treble but Lisianski flopped in the last race of the day. The Complete Man ran from a hopeless position at the turn to surprise White Lie and Angelic Warrior.
