Jockeys Shroff and Prakash give a sterling performance

By Usman Rangila

Ace jockey Pesi Shroff and the talented young rider B. Prakash were the star performers at Mahalaxmi racecourse on Sunday. Pesi was flawless astride Seychelles in the Greater Mumbai Police Trophy while Prakash showed that he does not lack the big-race temperament when he steered Knighted to a commendable victory in the Byculla Club Trophy.

After working his way up from the rear Mallesh Narredu aboard Queenstown (Batzushka – Great Request) ranged alongside Seychelles (Malvado – Rio De Janeiro) who was committed to the front by Pesi. With both these riders in full flow it was inevitable that a fierce battle be fought on the tracks. Both Seychelles and Queenstown went stride for stride and the latter seemed to be travelling the better of the two at one stage. Here Pesi had no option but to dig into the reserves of Seychelles. The Bezan Chenoy-groomed filly spread out her wings in response and stretched away from Queenstown.

Prakash, who is in rousing form these days, was a bit unlucky to have lost a certain race on Royal Amaretto (Steinbeck- Rhein Jewel) who was a victim of a freak accident in the first race of the afternoon. After repulsing the offensive run of Nautilus, Royal Amaretto was cruising for home when he slipped and almost crashed into the railings about 300m from home. Both Prakash and his mount recovered but Nautilus (Razeen – Naseem El Fajr) had the race well sewn up till then. This accident might have caused a leg injury to Prakash, as there was visible agony on his face while returning to paddock atop winner Master Zahir in the next race.

Master Zahir (Steinbeck – Green Medina) obliged his connections after the fine patch-up job done by trainer Mansoor Shah. Master Zahir accelerated well in the final stages of the race to pounce on leader Authentic. The four-year-old grey gelding held on well from Laurels who for the second time in succession appeared late on the scene. There was a fear that Prakash may not fulfill the rest of his commitments in the saddle but the young lad very courageously dispelled them. However he did not have any success till the Byculla Club Trophy was run towards the fag end of the day.

Prakash was to show fine temperament in the mile and three-quarter long journey for the Byculla Club Trophy, run at a very slow pace. Prakash kept Knighted (Chief’s Crown – Sea Basque) in close touch of leaders Jonty Rhodes and Super Sunrise till the field of six turned for home. Aslam Kader who bid his time in the rear with Audible made his move at this juncture and ranged alongside Knighted who too was alerted to his task. Prakash could not give Knighted his head as Jonty Rhodes and Audible baulked him. Displaying good fighting spirit, Prakash held his nerve and signalled Knighted with a tap or two on his flanks to mount his challenge. The got-abroad bay from Dallas Todywalla’s barn zipped ahead and drew clear of his rivals. Dicky-legged Sangtrash moved into second place ahead of Amarilo. Audible packed after being overtaken by the winner and ended last but one.

Despite figuring consistently on the board this season, Full Reason was ignored by all and sundry in the Betsetgo Gold Trophy. The daughter of Reasonable out of Full Eclipse, saddled by Magansingh Jodha, came through the shortest way home and was driven hard by jockey P. Belose to ward off the late challenge posed by Self Styled and Grey Area. Self Styled (Placerville – Lyrical Fantasy) gave a gallant performance but was clearly short of a run. Grey Area took time in warming up and thus ended a neck behind Self Styled.

Phrawah made amends for his last outing failure as jockey C. Rajendra took him on a near pillar to post mission. Flossy could not wrest the early lead and chased the winner all the way before Gasconade snubbed her at the post for the runner-up slot.

Rosehill Gardens caused a major upset when the Nana Raghunath-groomed filly sped away in the hands of Hanumant Singh. Favourite Adam’s Touch suffered a lot to the inexperience of apprentice Satish Nayak in the saddle but ended a fair second ahead of Charging Bullet.

Park Lane was ably ridden by apprentice P. Sandeep to win the Rock of Gibraltar Plate. The Mansoor Shah trainee finished with a flourish to catch Crown Dream close home. C. Rajendra, rather surprisingly, was loitering with Wagga Wagga at the tail end of the field and woke up only when Park Lane was home and dry.
