Weathering (Alnasr Alwasheek – Glimmer
of Water) chased Seville Star and Loving You right into the home
straight and stormed into the lead opposite the grand stands. The bay
filly trained by M. K. Jadhav kept her going under the whip to
graduate from the maiden ranks. Jadhav led in another winner in The
Pelican (Placerville – Natural Craze), the odds-on favourite to win
the Martell Mile. Allowing Mark Gallagher and Fantasy Star to call the
shots for the first six furlongs or so, The Pelican was never off the
bridle as he went on to wallop Fantasy Star.
B. Prakash had another comfortable
win astride debutant Eminent Leader in the final event of the day. The
Dallas Todywalla-trained gelding brought in-foal to Little Cindrella
and who is by Nebos, called a merry tune to his ten rivals and never
was in danger of being caught at any stage of the five-furlong sprint.
Mystic Lady was hard-ridden to place second while Rewarding King and
Khim took the minor slots on the judges’ frame.
The seven-race card was largely in
favour of the punters as there were no surprise winners. Evidence of
Faith was an exception as she chose to play truant. The mare sent out
by Robert D’Mellow had every possible factor in the race favouring
her but she simply "refused" to put her best foot forward.
Stay With Me tried to give a repeat performance of her last success
and nearly had her way until Pecan Pie decided to step into the
picture. Jockey P. Kamlesh, who has had a fair amount of success this
season, alerted Hosidar Daji-groomed daughter of Tecorno and breezed
past the leaders. Stay With Me, Draculla and Laktara finished in close
order. Evidence of Faith was never in the hunt and ended in the ruck.
Running after his relocation to
Hormuz Antia’s stables, Double Up put in a resolute run in the hands
of K. P. G. Appu to smother the runaway bid of Boldwin. The latter was
simply out-handicapped by the winner. Mambo King saved place money
with the fancied Silver Nova ending a poor fourth.
Aslam Kader was in one of his
infallible moods that went a long way in aiding Anagram to oblige her
supporters in the Nawabzada Rashiduzzaffar Khan Trophy. Moving his way
up gradually to be in close touch with Noble One and Ocean Breeze,
Aslam Kader sent Anagram in chase of Ocean Breeze in the last two
furlongs. The initial response from the daughter of Steinbeck out of
Ideas and Trends was lethargic. Aslam gave her a couple of cracks and
then rode her hands and heels. It took him a while before Anagram
could really get going and when she did so, Ocean Breeze was made to
suffer. The Imtiaz Sait-saddled joint-property of Deepak Khaitan and
Late Maj. P. K. Mehra spared three-parts of a length to Ocean Breeze
at the wire. Noble One could not sustain his start to finish bid yet
ended a creditable third by keeping Inimitable at bay.
