Shroff’s
resolve clinches the issue
|
Indian ace Pesi Shroff scripted a sensational finish of the
Kingfisher Indian 1000 Guineas (Gr I) on Sunday. Shroff rode
a gem of a race to steer favourite Six Speed to victory by
the thinnest of margins over lesser fanciedLady Moura.
Barring her stablemate Allaire, there are hardly any fillies from
her age group anywhere in the country who could probably match Six
Speed’s prowess. Before
her run on Sunday, Six Speed had won seven races from eight
starts. It was Allaire who had halted Six Speed's winning sequence
when she pipped her at the post in the Kingfisher Bangalore
Derby. With trainer Darius Byramji deciding against clashing Six
Speed and Allaire once again, Six Speed was expected to have it
easy.
Everything appeared to be going according to the script. But Naill McCullagh and Lady Moura
added a twist to the climax. As Six Speed brushed aside Afilado
and stormed into the lead in the home stretch, McCullagh had only
begun to make his move atop Lady Moura. The unlikely challenger
from Cooji Katrak’s yard then inched closer to join Six Speed.
Unfazed by the close proximity of Lady Moura, Pesi drove the Vijay
Mallya-owned filly for all his worth. Though Six Speed was shorn
of her usual brilliance, the daughter of Placerville out of
Haunting Beauty dug in for more when asked to do so by Pesi. The
winning post arrived at the right moment for both Pesi Shroff and
Six Speed. Though Six Speed won the big race, Pesi was
certainly not satisfied with the filly’s efforts and was candid
enough to agree that the filly did not give her best.
The tone for this brilliant performance was set earlier during the
day by former knight of the pigskin Hanut Singh, who now enjoys
giving instructions to his fellow riders in the paddock. Hanut
entrusted four-year-old filly Winawin, who twice played the role
of bridesmaid this season, to the 5kg claimer Satish Nayak on this
occasion. The daughter of Sir Bordeaux was turned out well and she
was a winner from the looks she sported in the paddock. Winawin
spared a good two and a quarter lengths to the main rival Final
Recovery to give Hanut his third career win.
On Thursday, jockey C. Rajendra produced another
superlative performance astride Yewall when races were held on the
all-weather track for the first time this season. Phrwaxshi with
apprentice F. Aaron on board almost swept her rivals off their
feet as she went wire to wire in the Columbia Plate. But Rajendra
drove Yewall resolutely in the final 100m to hit the wire before
Phrwaxshi could cause the damage.
Several other races in the card too were decided in close finishes
that were quite absorbing. Double Barrel got the better of runaway
leader near the post with C. Rajendra making a spectacle of
himself astride leaden-footed favourite Salsa Dancer.
Scandalous sped away to her maiden victory from Mischievous Times
who toiled without any success. Among Men struck immediately on
return to handicap races giving master Jaggy Dhariwal a well
deserved double. The son of Green Forest was the most stylish
winner of the day and can be placed to win again.
Ravi Biramne and Adil Dajee made positive things happen for
Cotopaxi who changed hands after his fruitless campaign at Pune.
More than anybody else, the credit of this maiden success of
Cotopaxi goes largely to jockey E. J. Lobow who tried to fool the
RWITC stipes by his antics astride Evening In Paris. For his misdemeanor
jockey E. J. Lobow has been suspended for three
months. Trainer Sorab Jilla has been twice lucky so far, but
should now pay heed to the warning signals, as this incident
happens only a fortnight after jockey Tony Bernard was punished
astride Millennium King. The last named won as a favourite on
Sunday after tons of money were bet on him.
Over The Ocean, Perceived Value, Mosaic and Blue Blood were the
other successful horses to impress on Sunday. Over The Ocean
registered an encore over debutant Chili Lady who lacked a crucial
run. Perceived Value’s task was made easy due to the withdrawal
of Piccolina at the starting gates. Despite carrying top-weight,
Mosaic proved far too superior for her rivals as she sauntered
away for an emphatic victory. Naill McCullagh competently handled
Blue Blood, as Rehanullah Khan’s five-year-old ward showed
Maltese Falcon and Fantasy that he has not lost his Pune form.
Lacking early pace, the well-bred filly Ally McBeal could do no
better than finish fourth but all is not lost for this Arti Doctor
ward who sure has the ability to bounce back to winning form.
