Although it left them with a gaping hole in their pockets, the superlative performance of Sonalika did certainly win the hearts of the genuine lovers of this sport as the underdog filly humbled an opposition which included, among others, Pleasures and Al Dente. Backed to the exclusion of her twelve rivals, Access All Areas made her twelve rivals in the S. A. Poonawalla Million (Grade 2) look quite ordinary. As Access All Areas had arrived in Pune armed with the impressive record of running second to Six Speed and Arrakis at Bangalore, it was but natural that she be the obvious choice of many to win the prestigious race. NOT SO LUCKY ALCHEMY LOSES TO ALAMEDA IN A THRILLING FINISH FOR THE IDAR GOLD TROPHY

It was a finish worth going miles to witness. Alameda and Alchemy were involved in a one of those rare, breath-taking finish witnessed on the turf here this season and the two steeds were fighting for honours in the Idar Gold Trophy (Grade 3) on Sunday. Deriving the best from the talent-reserves of jockey Aslam Kader, the 5 to 4 against favourite Alameda prevailed by a head over Pesi Shroff-piloted Alchemy and also posted the best timing ever for the derby trip. If Darius Byramji asks one of his wards with just three wins during a short career to boast of to match strides with Class I horses in Western India, there is bound to be some sceptism of his ability. But a chip of the old block that he is, young Darius was presumably aware of the calibre of the horses based in Western India that are presently rated above 80 by the handicapper. Star Shine, the three-year-old bay filly by Portroe out of Worthwhile, gave a top-notch performance on her maiden appearance here to win the Parx-General Rajendrasinhji Trophy (Grade 3) the highlight of this week’s racing programme. The Narendra Lagad nurtured filly ridden by C. Rajendra appeared very keen in the initial stages of the race but the jockey did well to get her settled as C. There have been very few occasions when veteran Rashid Byramji has set out on a mission that remains unaccomplished on his return home. On this occasion he arrived with The Music Man from Bangalore to take on some of the good type of Western India-based youngsters in the F. D. Wadia Trophy (Grade 2) on Sunday.
