Three of Arts (Diffident-Brave Ballerina), who has being moving from stable to stable like a nomad and is now camping in Subhag
Singh's barns, tracked Fire Dancer, Annot and Druids Glen till the they were all off the bit. P. Kamlesh now guiding the fortunes of Pesi Shroff trained Annot tried to steal a march but the acceleration shown by the half-money favourite in his earlier two outings had deserted him. Annot engaged Druid Glens and Three of Arts for a brief while before the last named responded to Nirmal Jodha's call with alacrity and settled the issue. Druids Glen pegged back Annot for the runner-up berth. Hoofbeats ran a tame fourth.
Two more highly-fancied horses lost during the day. The first one was from Narendra Lagad's yard. Star of the Season, having finished an impressive second behind the classy filly Guest Connection, was the automatic choice of a vast majority in the five-horse field contesting for the Desert Warrior Trophy. The earlier zest was however found missing in
the Royal Kingdom progeny. He remained in hopeless chase of Arti Doctor schooled Simply Gorgeous, who finally managed to call the shots and remained in charge all through the mile-and-a-half journey. Somerset West came tantalisingly close to overtaking the winner but P. S. Chouhan ridden Simply Gorgeous dug her heels in to thwart the
mare's furious bid.
Shiraz Sunderji's ward Major Wager disappointed for the second successive occasion this season but his supporters should take heart from the fact that he certainly came across a better specimen in Englehart, the eventual winner. The son of Diffident out of General Charge had a none-too-impressive debut on the opening day of the season and punters generally
didn't anticipate such a remarkable improvement in his form. The subsequent performance of Pesi
Shroff's ward during the morning trials after his lacklustre debut was eye-catching to say the least but that
didn't seem to wean them away from Major Wager, whose runs this season were fairly consistent. Englehart on his part made his intentions clear right from the word go and showed a clean pair of heels to Major Wager and seven other contestants. Kamlesh atop the second favourite faced no hassles at any stage of the race. Jalapeno's late run to finish third ahead of Pepe Junior was a heart-warming one. Pepe Junior too is improving with each run. Lago Medio ran disappointingly.
No sooner had Star of the Season failed than another horse from Lagad's string opened favourite. The opening odds were 5 to 4 against Enchanting Girl and went up gradually to 6 to 4. Punters get easily panicked whenever such incidents involving favourites from this yard occur and not surprisingly Oojah was sought after by some. Enchanting Girl (Warrshan-River Foyle) immediately laid these apprehensions to rest as she got straight down to business and Sunny Chinoy did the rest by steering her clear of her rivals. See The Truth ran half-heartedly to snatch the second spot from Oojah and Running Machine.
Going by the meagre odds quoted for Hosidar Daji's maiden filly Fantastic Fury (Young Senor-
Cornelia) the outcome of the curtain raiser seemed to have been a forgone conclusion. Fantastic Fury was bang on target and had an easy passage to victory. Serious
race goers were unimpressed with Magical Moon's poor show after a sharp increase in his price. This Imtiaz Sait trainee was unable to find himself in the money and this job was executed by Serendipity and Hector. Magical Moon ended up a pathetic fourth.
Rare Look, a failed favourite in his last attempt, made ample amends for that failure by showing tremendous improvement over that performance. Ridden by Aadesh Kumar on this occasion, Sanjay Kolse saddled Rare Look (Mischevious Music-Look) achieved an overdue victory. Punters, who pinned their hopes on San Juan after his run behind Ruby Rosa, were let down badly as the joint favourite sent out by Faisal Abbas was unable to match strides with the winner. Sam Aldo ran a forward race before ending second and was followed home by San Juan and Nucleus. Vikram Walkar gave a feeble ride to Nucleus and appeared to have done it on purpose.
In the concluding event, Fall of the Hammer (Razeen-Maribella) finally broke the jinx in the hands of apprentice D. K. Ashish. Sunderji's ward came with a fluent run down the straight to measure favourite Leonora and the much-fancied Lone Trojan. Farfallah exceeded expectations to figure on the judges` board after a long period and should be doing serious business after some fine tuning.
