Giacosa keeps her classic hopes alive

Apart from the excitement of getting the first glimpse of Giacosa (Placerville-Puzla), arguably the best three-year old based in Western India at the moment, the mediocre racing held on Friday had very little to offer to the serious race-goers.

Half of the eight-race card saw participation from horses belonging to the lowest class while two races were reserved for maiden juveniles. Expectedly then the element of competition in Friday's races was far below the expected standards. Also, the races won by Bright Side and Major Wager were actually framed after the original races advertised in the prospectus were rendered void due to paucity of runners. Pesi Shroff's generous contribution to these two races actually helped the club in conjuring up a face-saving card of eight races.

Dwelling on what was served in the name of horse-racing, Giacosa kept her classic hopes alive when she made a winning appearance here on Friday. Her potential never in doubt, yet there were concerns whether the dark bay filly would warm up to her task in the six-furlong trip. Giacosa's connections were also seized of this matter it seemed and it was not surprising to see jockey P. Kamlesh working at a feverish pitch to allow Pesi Shroff's ward make headway as soon as the starter's flag came down. The winner of the race was well and truly sighted the moment Giacosa got into her stride. Torque tried to get up to Giacosa but never really caused her any worry. Zroom finished on denying Lucky Honey the third berth. Premier Galaxy was the best of the beaten brigade as also Capriani, who ran on the outer rails in the final stages of the race. Both these horses should be striking early in the near future at Mahalaxmi.

Had Schubert not given Bright Side the opportunity to dominate him towards the fag end of the Super Hero Plate, the Giacosa team would've been celebrating a swift double. Schubert hit the front and seemed to be on course for an encore but Arti Doctor trained Bright Side (Serious Spender - Rasha) collared him after being hard driven by Pradeep Chouhan. Mischief In His Eyes ended third after a late gallop. The long straight of the Mahalaxmi racecourse will be ideally suited for this Imtiaz Sait trained youngster.

Arma (Razeen - Mikado) shed the maiden ranks in the last race to provide Arti Doctor a double. Bangalore-based rider Harish worked hard on him to keep Arma going when Love Forty came with a menacing run close home. Captive Heart came a cropper in the home stretch and was put down on humane grounds. His saddle partner Chouhan luckily escaped any serious injury.

Harish was also instrumental in the maiden victory of Major Wager (Major Impact - Anissa) towards the start of the day. Here again the skills of Harish were put to test by Pepe Junior, Salazaar and Siebel. He however remained unfazed and helped Major Wager emerge unscathed from the attack launched by his rivals.

Earlier Perfect Peace (Cruachan - Karibuni) from Saeed Shah's yard was ridden confidently by T.S.Jodha to overpower rank outsider The Rebel in the last furlong. The Rebel, with lesser-known V. Chandrakant in saddle, failed to keep a straight course when in charge of the running and this contributed largely to the success of Perfect Peace. Majorilla and Gracias Senorita ran disappointingly.

Horse Raddish (Ajaad - Maltese Falcon) allowed Robert D'Mellow to lead in his first winner of the season in the Dramatic Irony Plate. Entrusted to S. P. Ranjane, Horse Raddish landed a successful gamble for his connections with an easy win over Private Eye, Nach Baliye and Gorgeous Blue. Eyebrows get easily raised as a norm in the racing circles whenever an unusual betting trend is detected. The steady flow of money from those in the know in the direction of Horse Raddish made one speculate whether this race was one that you often hear as being made up? As usual, it is left to the punters to do the guess work.

Lone Trojan (Tirol - Trojan Lady) made light of the 62kg heavy impost on his back when living up to the promise shown in his last run against Fall Of The Hammer. The Bharath Singh trainee however had to contend with the threat posed by World War Three, who failed to keep a straight course under the pressure applied by Dashrath Singh and which may have cost Mansingh Jadhav's candidate a certain race.

Jayantilal Gor's ward Saarah (Cruachan - Azaria) defied the handicapper and conquered the extended journey to give rider Nirmal Jodha his back-to-back double. Favourite Benfica took charge at the turn and appeared to be in sight of her maiden win before Saarah came charging through the middle. Benfica wilted rather easily and conceding the minor places to A Royal High and the late-finishing Vedic Chants, who languished at the wrong end of the field till entering the straight.
