A terrific run unleashed by Cote D'Azur, a recent migrant from Bangalore, towards the fag end of the mile trip helped the Sanjay Kolse trained filly claim the Sir Sultan Chinoy Trophy on Saturday. The four-year-old daughter of Gaswar out of Baywatch thus lived up to the promise shown in her last run and Sanjay deserves a mention for showing no qualms in pitting her in Class II.

Cote D'Azur lay unconcerned at the wrong end of the field as Radical Power and Samarkhand fought for supremacy in the early stages of the race. Radical Power enjoyed the lead with Samarkhand beating a hasty retreat after S. S. Baria had spent much of his energy first in denying favourite Stafire a clear run and then committing hara-kiri by going at a cut throat pace with Radical Power. Golden Triangle then assumed command and was being hailed as a winner before Cote D'Azur was set alight by apprentice D. K. Ashish. Stafire ran on to be fourth behind Radical Power and should be worth following in the coming Mumbai season.

Pesi had two other engagements in Bergerac and Dreaming during the day but he didn't have any luck with either of his candidates. On straightening for home Bergerac was in sight of his maiden victory when Bonny Light decided to call it a day after making the entire running from the gates. Favourite Noble Replica (Greensmith-Azzilfi) however put in a sustained run to dash the hopes of the P. Kamlesh piloted Bergerac. Noble Replica veered out when coming into contention and almost allowed Bergerac to regain the lead but P. S. Chouhan managed to steer the Imtiaz Sait trainee to a half-length victory. Fiery Fortune came into the money courtesy the exhausted Bonny Light.

Last-outing winner Dreaming made a repeat attempt to go wire to wire over the mile-and-a-quarter journey of the Pune Racing Journalists Trophy but the Joy Chinoy ridden filly failed to last the trip and succumbed to the onslaught of Rehanullah Khan saddled Farfallah (Farajullah-Lady Grey). The grey gelding ran true to form and hit the wire first despite given a tough time by the wayward Saarah near the winning post. C. Rajendra ridden Night Life ran half-length abreast of the winner.

Narendra Lagad schooled Here Comes The Don was installed as the pre-race favourite on the strength of his performance a day earlier when he had ended a close third behind winner Steel Butterfly. But the Don was unable to come anywhere near the winning post and was gone with the wind as second favourite Amberley (Duja-Flattery) went pillar-to-post and held on despite veering out of a straight course in the straight. C. S. Jodha contributed another winner to the kitty of Nina Lalvani by steering Amberley to her maiden win.

The long-in-tooth Habit (Serious Spender-Sharanella) shocked the followers of form when he put in a vastly improved to show in the Sparkling Cyanide Plate run over six-furlongs. Habit had ended last a distance in a field of nine behind Imola, who finished second last. Without any mitigating factors in his favour, Vikram Jodha partnered Habit came with a powerful run to outwit Medtias Pride and High Voltage. Thunder Zone and All Or Nothing, two of the fancied runners in the field never seemed to be in the hunt and ended thus.

The manner in which the odds against Simply Smashing drifted in the betting her chances of winning the race looked very dim. But Hosidar Daji's candidate proved her detractors wrong by making a resolute bid in the hands of Malcolm Kharadi and going on to score a comfortable win over Fiddlers Ferry and Behaving Badly. The blood vessels of Simply Smashing gave way for the second time in succession but fortunately for the punters she had enough power to last till the final destination.

C. S. Jodha completed a good double and allowed Hormuz Antia to do the same when he guided Oscar Star (Alnasr Alwasheek-Star Role) to a narrow win over Suleman Pasha and Asian Express. Fire Dancer had led all the way till she surrendered the lead close home and was pushed out of the third berth by the late burst of Asian Express, who came from way behind to figure in the judges' frame. D. K. Ashish aboard the favourite Convenience raced in close proximity of the leaders and was in search of a clear run which was denied to him till the end resulting in him ending fifth. He needs to be persevered with in Mumbai.

Striking Out (Don't Forget Me-Arctic Eyes) made every post of the concluding race a winning one after Dashrath Singh grabbed the initiative with Magansingh Jodha's ward immediately when the starter's flag came down. He was a length clear of his nearest rival Rare Look who came when the race was all over bar the shouting. Gatravat ended third ahead of King's Best. King's Best and Art of War had their own followers but didn't show up in the fight.
