Live Legend hits the spot in Southern Command Trophy

Live Legend whose winning run stopped with two victories in the initial days of the last Mumbai season gradually regained his form and ran true to form in the Southern Command Gold Trophy (Gr.3) on Sunday.

The Imtiaz Sait trained son of Razeen out of Husun had sounded his return to form when he finished second to Bold Faith at Bangalore and produced a similar effort this term in Pune behind Goodness Gracious in the Gr.2 Turf Club Trophy.

The extra furlong in Sunday's feature did the trick for him on this occasion not to forget the sensible riding approach of jockey S. S. Baria, whose talent remained unexploited largely due to his own lack of foresight as far his riding career was concerned.

Nevertheless, the long hours Sait spent in tuning Live Legend paid rich dividends as the five-year-old gelding avenged his defeat at the hands of favourite Amazing Power in the Maharaja Sir Harisinghji Trophy over an identical trip at Mahalaxmi last summer. Hawke Bay tried to create a sensation as he pulled away from the pack at the gates and appeared in an unrelenting mood. But Baria always had Live Legend in striking distance and the moment he made his bid Hawke Bay had to capitulate. Amazing Power could do not complete the frame as Southern Regent took the last minor place on the board.

Sait had earlier led Dynamical (Royal Kingdom-More Dynamic) in to the winner's arena after the P. S. Chouhan ridden juvenile filly completed a hat-trick of wins. Chouhan had to conjure up all his skills as rank outsider Kadima (ex Castle Pride) very nearly succeeded in his attempt to cash in on his handicap. Dynamical however got stronger at the finish and kept her unbeaten record intact. Cine Star ended a tame third and was followed closely by Degas. Hoofbeats surprisingly didn't figure in the fray at all.

Narendra Lagad had a better day out in the middle with a treble through joint favourite Storm Alert (Tirol-Eastern View), the well-fancied Sphinx (Dark Nile-Affiance) and the neglected Hector (Diffident-Abound). The strong handling of C. Rajendra enabled Storm Alert to cover precious ground in the straight and collar his nearest rival Love And Be Loved on the post. Just seconds earlier apprentice Dashrath Singh lost his balance astride Firey Future as his saddle slipped and lost a certain place in the bargain. Black Brilliance, who attracted some smart money, fortunately got to keep the third berth ahead of Princeway and Rainbow Shine, who showed some marked improvement on form.

Hector found few supporters in the betting ring as Kings Best caught the market's fancy in a wide open field. The favourite never lived up to the expectations as Brezhnev called a merry tune to the field and surrendered to stablemate Hector but not before showing a dogged approach. Tracy came into the final picture after a sluggish beginning. Goldeen once again was victim of circumstances and was a spent force after a hard climb all the way up the hill.
Sphinx with Sunny Chinoy in saddle fought a grim battle with both Silent Spectator and Rage of Angels after the former brought the field into the straight. Rage of Angels petered out and Sphinx then stormed ahead for a narrow win over Phi who, but for the interference she received close home, would've definitely turned the tables on the winner. Nucleus ran on late as usual and had to be content with the third place ahead of Turf Crown who was more than happy to see his barn mate carrying on the good work for his master.

SomethingAboutHer (Local Talent-Something Beautiful) was a different customer without blinkers while Major Wager who decided to sport them was not. The Shiraz Sunderji saddled favourite tried to set his own sweet pace over the mile trip but had no strength to repel the onslaught of the Pesi Shroff trained filly. Major Wager was not disgraced in his defeat and should redeem himself by adopting a different strategy.

Thief Of The Knight (Greensmith-Fast 'N Tricky) provided another shock victory of the day. With Touch A Star and Robinho failing to meet the demands of their followers, it was left to the R. Shelar ridden horse from Faisal Abbas' yard to seize the opportunity and earn some valuable stakes. Touch A Star raised a glimmer of hope when she appeared to take over the mantle from Heart of Danger but it was soon extinguished by Thief Of The Knight who unleashed a powerful run down the straight.
