The price movements in the betting markets across the country before the
start of the race signalled a victory for Southern Regent while a bleak
future awaited the original favourite Aspinalls as suggested
emphatically by the illogical surge in the odds against him. So, not
many race goers were surprised to see Rajendra hit the front with
Aspinalls in the five-horse field. Royal Falcon stayed close to the
leader with Campanero keeping Southern Regent company and So Perfect
ridden off the pace by Ruzaan.
Whether Rajendra was more concerned about his own predicament or was
keen to know if Southern Regent was ready to launch his assault is not
known but it was amusing to see him have peep over his shoulders after
travelling a mile. Campanero meanwhile stuck to his job of nagging
Southern Regent and not allowing him a free run.
Prakash waited briefly for the front pair to split before switching
lanes in the final run-in. Rajendra and Chouhan also decided relinquish
their responsibility at this juncture but were shocked to find So
Perfect and not Southern Regent in the space created by them. After some
minor jostling between the five horses, So Perfect forged into
the lead with Southern Regent close on his haunches. The fight between
them lasted for a few strides and culminated with So Perfect lowering
the colours of S. Ganapathy's ward. The monumental weight carried by
Southern Regent was also instrumental in his submission to Dr. Vijay Mallya's property
who carried 13.5 kilos less than the favourite. Pesi Shroff must've experienced extreme
gratification on his ward's achievement. Shroff was earlier associated
with the maiden win of Schubert (Diffident-Hi Fidelity), who gave an
armchair ride to P. Kamlesh.
Ganapathy's ritual weekly visit to the racetrack to lead winners
remained uninterrupted when Evatina (Placerville-Abbess) registered
an encore. Prakash kept the filly in check as Acindar made the initial
running and slipped into the lead on entering the home stretch. Enaksi
tried to collar the leader but couldn't stop Evatina from avenging her
S. A. Poonawalla Million defeat last year. The supporters of Live Legend
craved to have his glimpse in the fight but the Rajendra ridden resident
of Imtiaz Sait's barn ran hopelessly throughout. Although no precise
reason could be attributed to Live Legend's below par show, it must be
said that Rajendra's riding on Saturday raised more questions than
answers for serious race goers. As for Imtiaz, one could only say that he
a bad day in office.
This duo brought disaster for the moneybags when Priceless Hero
unabashedly carried on his role of dishing out cheap stuff instead of
the heroics expected by all who are overwhelmed by his occasional flash
of brilliance. Nina Lalvani trained filly Twilight Charm (Greensmith-Island Charm) meanwhile celebrated her return to the lowest class by
unleashing a powerful run in the hands of C. S. Jodha to score a narrow
win over Ring Bearer and Maybach. Priceless Hero ran a pathetic fourth.
Cracker ran a forward race and should earn her mounting corn bill before
the season ends.
Rajendra's next visit to the track was atop Snow Tiger, also from Sait's string, and the grey filly emulated
Priceless Hero in not taking part in the battle and instead assigned
that task to Rejuvenite (Tirol-Liebestraum) who not only proved his
class but also provided trainer Mansoor Shah his first winner on
comeback. What's more, jockey T. Bernard found himself riding a
winning horse after a gap of over five years! A silent coup was also attempted by trainer Asad Siddiqui with Samarkhand but the chestnut ran a close second after
braving a minor interference from the favourite.
Rajendra's luck didn't change a bit as the Dallas Todywalla schooled
second favourite Jubilation ran without hope in the race where Get Fresh
registered a big upset though not entirely unfancied. The piping-hot
favourite Intrinsic Value lost speed far too rapidly in the closing
stages of the race despite her master Altaf Hussain electing to race
on her optimum trip of six-furlongs. She had company in the form of
Cosmos for some time before Narendra Lagad's charge Get Fresh (Be
Fresh-Gulsitara) was brought into contention by Satish Nayak and put
his head in front. The winner's stable-partner Don Gama
added insult to the injury of Intrinsic Value by eliminating her from
the money. Lagad had earlier saddled the S. N. Chavan ridden favourite
Cornelia Supra (Diffident-College Princess), who eluded Bionic Angel
near the post after collaring Charging Rhino.
The succour for Rajendra and Sait finally came in the concluding race
when Czarina (Glory of Dancer- Flying Home) scraped through by a neck
over Call To Arms. There were increased fears of this duo going home
empty-handed as the odds against Czarina went astray. This dreadful
eventuality was averted thanks to the inconvenience caused by Magic
Spell to Call To Arms. Magic Spell took out Call To Arms both before and
after the bend to effectively seal his fate. K. P. G. Appu did succeed
in shrugging off Magic Spell but it was too late by then.
Magansingh Jodha trained filly Pampered Princess was kept on a straight
course by Suraj Narredu which helped her Jai Govind Stud-resident
sire Hymn register his first victory in Western India. The filly
sauntered away for an effortless win over Ancient Princess and Siberian
Siren. Andalusia and Bergerac ran poorly.
