Elusive Study keeps Carlos at bay

The chestnut colt Elusive Study (Elusive Pimpernel - Classic Study) overcame a sluggish start to claim the Knight Earnest Trophy but it was largely due to the troubled passage encountered by Carlos right from the word go. Jockey P. S. Chouhan nonetheless was relentless on Pesi Shroff’s ward as he gained momentum in the straight. K. P. G. Appu meanwhile faced a dilemma while making up his mind on whether to wait for a non-existent opening ahead of him or come wide into the straight. He chose the latter route and made rapid recovery but that was not enough to lower the colours of Elusive Study. Luck Factor and Land of Peace were in the vanguard till the turn and retired gracefully. Sooner or later, both are these horses are capable of earning a bracket.

Chouhan once again excelled aboard the Sangramsingh Joshi saddled The Rising (Forest Fair – Miss Padmini). Although outpaced in the initial running of the race by the pack led by Major Roberts, The Rising gained places steadily to be in a striking position in the home stretch. Annot with Ashish Tograllu in saddle was hemmed up towards the rails. The Dominator led briefly before The Rising pounced on him in the last 100m. Annot ended a fair third behind The Dominator and just a nose ahead of Major Roberts.

Dallas Todywalla began the day on a winning note with Touch The Sky (Serious Spender – Ampula) and celebrated his Navroze in style. Touch The Sky gave jockey Harish an opportunity to rejoice his comeback in the saddle after making the running over the entire seven-furlong trip and drew away for a comfortable victory in the end.

Narendra Lagad’s candidate Spica (Senure – Media Frenzy) found even the legitimate support for her in the betting fading away close to race time but the filly ridden by S. N. Chavan proved her detractors wrong. Spica was kept on the outside lane by Chavan as four horses raced abreast in the early stages. Expensive Affair soon dropped back and Spica took a slender lead at the final turn. Mantovani, the new market fancy, tried to intimidate Spica but Chavan pulled out all stops on the filly to show the racing world what difference he can make to the chances of any horse when he means business. Spica raced away for an emphatic win over Private Eye whose late flourish deprived Mantovani the runner-up berth.

Vinayak saddled Covenant (Exploit – Laurie Begone), who was available at cramped odds, gave no anxious moments to his followers in the Gold Giver Plate and made ample amends for his narrow failure against Cairndhu earlier. Covenant was pressed into the lead by P. Kamlesh soon as the starter’s flag came down and he held the advantage right through the scurry.

Haifa Victory (Hymn – Panchellita) was hard-ridden by P. Belose to outwit Hormuz Antia’s ward Schubert near the winning post in the Jamshid Plate where the fancied horses, Steel Butterfly and Appreciate, failed to make the desired impact. Schubert took a smart jump from the gates and made a start-to-finish bid which looked possible till Haifa Victory arrived on the scene. Magansingh Jodha’s candidate not only pipped Schubert on the post but survived the late onslaught of Red Amytheist. The five-furlong journey probably proved to be too short for the liking of Steel Butterfly, who should be a force to reckon over a slightly longer distance.

Paris Hilton (Warrshan – Peperoni) had given a dismal performance earlier this month but showed remarkable improvement to claim the day’s concluding race in the hands of Shailesh Shinde. The Subhag Singh trained filly tracked Alishan along with Thunderelo and Winning Star early in the race but soon stepped up speed to wrest the advantage. Shailesh kept his composure and drove his mount hands and heels to win narrowly from Thunderelo and Ganador. Thunderelo was clearly the best of the beaten lot. Winning Star’s performance was as enigmatic as his master’s persona.
