Canton Caper shows a clean pair of heels

Canton Caper (China Visit – Safari Girl), though neglected in betting arena, had enough power and stamina to negotiate the tough ground conditions and the seven-furlong trip for the Chantilli August Handicap. Without taking away any credit from her sparkling show, it must be said that the Imtiaz Sait trained filly was a major beneficiary of the public fancy Star Gesture’s reluctance to put his best foot forward. Karthik Ganapathy’s candidate attracted a lot of betting on the strength of his excellent debut run when he ended an unextended second to the highly rated Quest for Cash. Sadly, he chose not to oblige and instead elected to follow the footsteps of his stable-mate Mountain Bear, an expensive failure on Saturday.

K. P. G. Appu had the early advantage over Nitrous and the rest which kept on increasing gradually as the race progressed. Although Nitrous reduced the margin of defeat in the final stages, Canton Caper was never in any peril of losing the race. Both Giocometti and Oyster Princess, who filled the frame will be better off after this experience. Runner-up Nitrous is not likely to linger in the maiden ranks for long. There was nothing to write home about Star Gesture’s pathetic run.

The supporting event too had a stunning upset. Bezan Chenoy trained Elmwood (Glory of Dancer – Baloustar) was ridden to a confident victory by Dashrath Singh in the Almanac Trophy. Dashrath always kept Elmwood in close attendance of leader Torque and Giacosa and unleashed a terrific turn of foot to stun both the fancied runners. Torque in fact faded out in the last furlong but Samarkhand increased her misery by squeezing her out of the race while she was in the process of dropping back. Giacosa didn’t quicken and so did Sovereign Power, who was also inconvenienced by lack of adequate support in the saddle. Aquilo ran a suggestive race though he retired from the frame in the dying moments of the race.

C. Rajendra's solitary success atop Todywalla’s ward Tigress Noire (Senure – Rio Anna) at the start of the day was followed by the inexplicable defeat of the on-money favourite Star Always.

Tigresse Noire let Boss Elements lead the way but only till the turn from where Rajendra urged her to take over the mantle. Tigress Noire seized the running but had to be hard-ridden to keep Crespo at bay.

Don Surti’s protégé Don’t Be Silly (Warrshan – Shirley Valentine) proved far too speedy for his rivals as K. P. G. Appu took him on a successful pillar-to-post mission in the Carbon Star Plate. Star Always was in the wagon behind the winner all through the race. Algo Mas fell back after a forward to end fourth behind Mughal E Azam.

Narendra Lagad led in favourite Jewel Star (Eljohar – Fair Counsel) who was powerfully driven by S. N. Chavan to gain an upper hand over Queen of Hearts. The latter made the entire running in the hands of C. S. Jodha but went down fighting to the winner.

Deeleecious (Afternoon Deelites – Andestine) produced a sparkling run in response to the call given by her rider Malcolm Kharadi and won running away in the Neolight Trophy. The Pesi Shroff saddled filly was given her head by Malcolm only when the field straightened for home. She came with gigantic strides to snatch the lead momentarily wrested by Desert Dust who was upstaged by World War Three for the runner-up slot.

Better fitness levels did the trick for Mustang Sally (Cruachan – God’s Desire) in the concluding race of the day. The Dashrath Singh ridden and Anil Kumar saddled mare improved on her previous run this season and thrashed favourite Amadomio and the rest. Amadomio was clearly short of this run and should make amends soon. Precision and Cincinnati ran poorly but Nuncio ran on gamely to finish third.
