Bloodless win for Golden Fortune

Golden Fortune’s win in the Mysore Jewellery Mart Gold Cup, the feature event of Wednesday’s races, was not entirely unexpected. The son of Twist And Turn had all the credentials, having gone down close home to Chimango in his last outing during the Summer Season but the bloodless manner in which he swamped the opposition came as a big surprise. Star Sensation who had won at the expense of stablemate Own Vision and Attorney in his last run at Bangalore, was the overwhelming favourite but the son of Placerville appeared to have taken a holiday. He was never in the fray from the word `go’ and Star Sensation was not sighted long after the issue had been settled. The conditions were no doubt treacherous because it rained hard right through the day but then the son of Placerville was expected to revel in such conditions as much Golden Fortune. But in the event, Golden Fortune left his rivals stranded long way from home, quickening for home inside the final furlong to win as he pleased. Anchor and Aerobee filled up the next two slots.

Star Sensation struggled to find his feet and despite being drawn well and could not hold his place and dropped back to the rear group while Golden Fortune raced comfortably in the mid group. Rounding the final bend, Golden Fortune moved swiftly through the middle and went clear even as the others was struggling to get going. The conditions surely exaggerated the merit of the eventual winner.

Magic Music continues to be fancied over a sprint though the daughter of Twist And Turn would be better off tackling longer trips. Magic Music won over a sprint during the Bangalore Summer Season by the skin of her teeth against a mediocre opposition. She failed as a favourite earlier in the season over a similar trip but race goers continued to put their faith in her abilities to sprint when she was made the market rage in the 1200 metres Srirangapattana Plate (Div I). Magic Music chased Different Story well into the straight before packing up. Different Story then shaped like a winner but Indigenous who had served notice of an imminent win by his eye-catching run in his last essay, covered plenty of ground in the final furlong and won close home. The lower division of the race went the way of Onetouch Toomuch who proved too good for the opposition. Fancied Regal Effect made no impact on the race and ran like a dud.

The latter part of the programme was run in pouring rain and as such, in conditions that were far from ideal. However, the redeeming feature was that form generally held good though the firm favourites did not always oblige. Kissinger was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1600 metres Baikanoor Plate but the mile long trip and the conditions went against the on-money favourite who was in distress rounding the final bend and was never in contention. Tashann led the field from the word `go’ and though she shifted out from a straight course in the final furlong, this proved to be a blessing as the ground was firmer there and the daughter of Pennine Ridge could stave off the challenge from Actuary. Actuary threatened briefly but jockey Alford failed to pack punch and to compound his problems, he elected to move from outside to the inside where the ground was badly cut up. Newmachar who was one of the strongly fancied runners in the race, put up a poor show.

Jockey Harish who drove out Tashann to an upset win, was in his elements while guiding Don’tforgetmaumann to a narrow win over Flox. Moving up from the outside draw, Flox took charge and led right through the trip only to lose virtually on the post, Harish managing to extract that bit extra from the Kuttappa ward by sheer persistence. Laptap did not have the wherewithal to justify the support in adverse conditions.

Silver Storm had been a fair performer during the Bangalore Summer Season and he maintained his upward progress with a resolute win over Krugar Park. Jockey Suraj Narredu did well to get Silver Storm into a striking position from outside the draw and though his progress was hampered by Krugar Park who was drifting out, the talented jockey did well to get his mount out of trouble and drove out the second favourite to a fine win. Krugar Park stayed on to be second best despite lackadaisical effort on the part of jockey Sridhar. Grey Bull was third ahead of favourite Common Wealth.

Dr Pepper justified the overwhelming support in the betting ring in the hands of up and coming apprentice Jagadeesh. Despite not getting a clear run in the early part of the race, Jagadeesh was able to push the favourite through an opening along the rails from a wider position and then managed to keep the public rage safely in front of a late-finishing Argentum Blue who flattered to deceive. Apricot who had run into a bad interference when fancied during the Mysore Summer Season, made amends with a resolute win. There was inspired support for Prestigious Baby but the Tocave Botta progeny’s run at the top of the heap was too brief for comfort and she packed up after bringing the field into view.
