Sonic Boom Marches on with Fifth Straight Win

Form does not depend on distances. Sonic Boom proved it while notching up a sensational fifth straight victory at the Delhi races held on Tuesday. His achievement came over six furlongs' Madras Race Club Cup. Trainer Mohsin Khan and jockey Gurpreet Singh shrared a brace each. Available at nourishing odds, Sonic Boom seemed to be reading the pace behind Senegal, Degas and the favourite Shubh Shubh till the race came to a head. And when he swung into action, the trio had no other option but to play the role of onlooker. His owner and stablemate Shubh Shubh, who spent precious time being blocked till the final furlong, could get a proper run only when the race was almost in the safe keeping of the eventual victory. Had he poked through between Senegal and Degas in the early stages, the result would have been different. Degas, who incidentally was the track record holder of the sprint's distance, failed to even utilise the benefit of handicap and had to be content with the third place after being necked out by Shubh Shubh. Senegal was unlucky, who despite leading the way narrowly till 300m, had to receive interference before completing the event at the fourth position. "Frankly speaking, I had never expected his win but what ever be, it should be admired,” Sunil Kumar Verma, owner of Sonmic Boon, told me. "Though he had scored once over the similar trip last season yet there was little doubt seeing the outstanding display of Shubh Shubh," he said. "I have a soft corner for him as he never got clear opening," he added. "The outcome is not much surprising, I knew the duo would be in the frame but Shubh Shubh would go down so easily is something that made me sit up," Ishwar Singh Parmar, trainer of Sonic Boom, said. "The duo would again be in fray for the champion sprinters cup," he added. The opening event - Ball Room Plate - which was made for the maiden horses, saw the odds-on favourite Green Future crumbling down within the shadow of the winning post. The gritty filly was stunned by Green Ribbon. Incidentally, Pommery, who ran third, was disqualified as jockey Rajinder Saini was found guilty of not weighing-in. Another favourite who went down closely in the following race was Ashwa Paddma. The jockey of the runner-up tried to impress upon the authorities against the victorious Take A Chance but the plea was turned down. The run is best ignored. Silver Peg, who ran third, looked a bit gross. Jockey Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who failed to guide the fortune of Ashwa Paddma, later corrected himself by partnering Middle Man. Middle Man should achieve an encore. Trainer Mohsin Khan and jockey Gurpreet Singh got united towards the last phase of the day and succeeded in making back-to-back double through Opera Royale and the Boss. The former horse should set her sight for the third victory.
