Solitary Man saves the day

Solitary Man emerged victorious in the Lt Col. Govind Singh Memorial Cup at the Delhi races on Tuesday. On a day on which as many as five favourites crumbled down, he was the lone public fancied to live upto the expectations. Picking up momentum from the mock race which he had won impressively earlier, he guided his way on his own while mince meeting the field in a pillar-to-post affair. "Though he faced a mediocre set yet the victory is quite convincing", Sukhdish Singh, trainer, told me. "He is still immature and it takes him some time to come to hands but I'm sure he'll definitely be a different horse in the next venture" he said. Choice Own, who was trying to run closer to the winner, could not find better place than the runner-up berth. Smiles, who ran third in the maiden attempt, should soon taste a joy of victory. Nymphetamine, daughter of Winning Wave - who was the local top class contender, was observed to be shying while galloping down the track. She should definitely follow the suit of her mother after being matured. A nine-year-old Balle Balle began the show of 38th day of the season at the nourishing odds. His Start-to-finish finish bid seemed coming under threat when Sheer Excellence came with a powerful run to turn the table, but it was the handling that made the difference. The latter should make amends. Tactic performed brilliantly with the support of Tongue-strap and finished in the third spot. The big upset of the day was Winning Chick's half-a-length victory over the much fancied Inspector Eagle. The handicap counted most in the matter of the duo. Carrying 13.5 kilos less than Inspector Eagle, Apprentice Jockey jai Prakash guided the fortune of the A Khan-trained filly. The distance over which the top weighted colt travelled was not favourable for him knowing the fact that he has always showed his prowess over the longer trip. Barchetta is knocking at the doors. The Reasonable plate witnessed a nail-biting finish between the young apprentice jockeys K Sunny Kumar on Superba and Irfan Ali aboard Lady's crown. The former eventually prevailed by a whisker after making a re-gallop tremendoulsly towards the end. Lady's crown would have won if she had galloped properly by keeping her head straight in the last strides. Avtaar caught the eye by finishing a wee bee late after coming from the hind group. Much Faster, the public choice, took the mile trip as a preparatory gallop for some other day. The most piping hot favourite runner of the day was Middle Man but he only found himself breathing down on the neck of "Before You". To snatch the issue, the jockey of the loser (Pawan Sharma) even went on further to impress the stewards by lodging an objection of having had received a check in the initial stages but it bore no fruitful awnsers. Ashwapratap, who bolted to the polo ground and the Air Force Golf Club, was scratched off, otherwise the result would have been changed. King Challange brought the curtains down on the proceedings by packing off the field in the lower division of the Jai Govind Stud Plate an impressive way. Incidentally, He became the first juvenile at this centre to score in class three. He should complete an encore. The real battle was only seen for the second place as Superb Success, High Opinion and Queen Amedale locked their horns. The camera gave Superb Success an edge over the duo but failed to seprate them and they had to share the third position.
