Trainer K S V Prasad Raju leading Kohinoor Wish (A Imran Khan Up), winner of The Sri S.Ramakrishnam Raju Memorial Cup

Prasad Raju’s Kohinoor Wish, who had finished an impressive second in the Deccan Derby early this month, cruised home in the S. Ramakrishnam Raju Memorial Cup, the feature of the concluding day’s races at Hyderabad. Going into the race as the piping hot favourite, Kohinoor Wish decimated the opposition with a sweat-less performance. Jockey Imran Khan had plenty in hand on Kohinoor Wish and eased him up well before the winning post. Scubarioo moved to take the second spot ahead of Indian Storm while the early leader Mission Chief finished fourth.

The 28-day Hyderabad Monsoon season came to an end on Monday. L.V.R. Deshmukh took the trainer’s honours with 30 wins to his credit. Pradeep S. Chouhan created a history of sorts by romping home with 45 wins amongst the jockeys, which is the best performance by any jockey so far during Monsoon at this centre. Jockey Karan Singh had ridden 43 winners sometime in the 70s but the official statistics at the club is available only from 1980 onwards. Chouhan started his career in the year 1998, after a six-month stint at the Amateur Rider’s school at Mumbai. Starting off as an apprentice with trainer M.P. Jodha, he has come a long way to earn his first championship. “Thanks to all my owners and trainers who helped me get this championship. It’s a nice feeling to hold this trophy,” said Pradeep, during a chat with Indiarace after the championship presentation. Apprentice Ajit Kumar with 16 wins was the champion jockey claiming allowance.

Rohan Bloodstock Pvt. Td., represented by Mr. Haresh N. Mehta & Mrs. Mayurri H. Mehta emerged as the leading individual owner, while their ward Becket was adjudged as the Champion Horse. Col. S.B. Nair was the leading Individual owner for horses based at Hyderabad. Aphrodisiac, trained by Shehzad A. Abbas and owned by Mr. & Mrs. M. Suresh Kumar Reddy and Dr. & Mrs. Syed Ainuddin Arif was adjudged as the horse of the season.

The final day turned out to be fruitful for trainers K.S.V. Prasad Raju, D. Netto, jockey A. Imran Khan and apprentice Kiran Naidu, all of whom won a brace each.

Prasad’s Commanding Heights lifted the Dundoo Ekamber Memorial Cup. Victorous Sally led till the last 400 metres from where Commanding Heights surged ahead, opening a gap of almost four lengths, which came in handy towards the finish, to ward off the spirited effort of Aspire and Guiding Light.

Netto and Kiran Naidu combined to lift the higher division of the Dundoo Ekamber Memorial Cup with Alexander Square and doubled it with Key Note in the Cape Knight Plate. Alexander Square, who had found one better in his previous two outings this season, finally spurted well with apprentice Naidu. Jewel In the Crown came in with a late dash, to finish a close second while My Tyson was knocked out to the third spot. Key Note fought out with Aspiring Star throughout the straight and got the better by half a length at the finish in the Cape Knight Plate.

True Star was quick to take a charge passing the 400 metres in the Onuo Onnu Onnu Plate, the opening race of the day and just managed to hold on and win from Nandanvanaa, who came from the last position covering enormous ground.

Vijay’s Famme made every post a winning one in the lower division of the Nawab Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Trophy while Arya needed the power-packed finish of P.S. Chouhan to win the higher division from Glorious Bay.

M.V. Narayan Rao’s Regal View brought the curtains down for the Monsoon Season winning the Fragrance Plate.
