L.V.R.deshmukh trained Pedalo (Rebuttal-Palladio) recorded a facile victory, in the Dubai Cup, a race for horses in category II, which was specially framed to commemorate the visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Haya, to the city of Hyderabad. Her Highness, who is the President of Federation Equestre International (FEI), had earlier in the day inaugurated the 2011 World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) conference that is being held in Hyderabad. The Princess of Dubai was present at Malakpet race track to witness the day’s proceedings and took the stage to present the Dubai Cup Trophy to the winning team.

Pedalo, the chestnut son of Rebuttal, a runaway winner on debut was installed as the firm favourite among the fifteen runners that lined up for the seven furlongs feature of the day. Pedalo raced in about sixth position, not far from the leader Vijay’s Rose till the field turned their heads for the final dash. Inside the last furlong and a half, Jockey P.S.Chouhan reminded Pedalo of his task and the youngster raised a masterly gallop to romp home. Pedalo, looks to be a classy colt and will be a force to recon with, in the ensuing classics at Hyderabad. The long time leader Vijay’s Rose held on to finish second while Golden Rule beat Moheena for the third place.

The WEVA Cup was divided into two races. M. Sathyanarayana trained crown Castle (Epicentre-Ice Castle) smashed the opposition to set a new course record over the five and a half furlongs distance, in the higher division. Jockey Vivek settled the ‘on money’ favourite behind the leader Kathakali till the last 300 metres and moved as smooth as silk, to score an encore. Victorous Sally and Fine Racer were the fastest finishing among the beaten brigade and they finished in that order behind the leader.

There was lot of action in the lower division, both on the race track and later in the Stewards room. The favourite Indian Epic raced on the haunches of Flash of Emerald and Rio Grande with Tillcowscomehome running close to Indian Epic as they rounded the final bend. As they came around to straighten up for the final dash Imran Khan forced his way to move ahead and in the process came across Tillcowscomehome’s path which resulted in jockey J.Vikas being dislodged. A steward’s enquiry was ordered into the dangerous riding of jockey A Imran Khan and Indian Epic was disqualified. L.D’Silva trained Rio Grande (Ontario-Sexy Gal) who had originally finished second was elevated as the winner while True Future and Star Prospect moved up to finish second and third place respectively. Imran was later suspended from riding for four days due to his dangerous riding.

P.S.Chouhan who had partnered Pedalo in the feature of the day had powered his way on M.V.Narayana Rao trained Chemeli (Black Cash-Calais), in the Deccan Star Cup. Chamatkar was on a start to finish, opening a big leeway but ran out of gas as he neared the distance marker. Chemeli and Grey Shot charged ahead together and the hard riding of Chouhan enabled Chemeli to gain a length and a half lead at the finish. Mighty Prince travelled very wide throughout the final stretch to finish third in front of Welcome Baby.

Narayana Rao’s Wedding Gift (Royal Kingdom-Virginia Flapper) upset the apple cart of the well backed Silver Crown, in the lower division of the Nagarjuna Sagar Plate. Sathyanarayana’s Silver Crown was in front all the way from the start and looked good 100 metres from home. Wedding Gift under apprentice A.K.Pawar covered plenty of ground from the rear and flashed past Silver Crown in the shadow of the winning post. Ann Arbor was third a length and a half adrift while another fancied runner Dauntless filled the frame.

Laxman Singh trained Lumiere Blanche (Gaswar-Dancing Flame) seems to have got over her wavering habit in the home stretch, which cost her a race in her previous outing and stretched out fluently, to register a facile victory, in the higher division of the Nagarjuna Sagar Plate. After accompanying Stadium of Light till the top of the straight, Lumiere Blanche left the rest far behind before being eased up. Cannon Jet moved late to take the second spot.

K.S.V.Prasad Raju trained Golden Adagio (Major Impact-Midnight Venture) a maiden from ten outings charged towards the money back favourite, Miss Watermelon, in the dying moments of the Taramati Cup and got the better by a ‘neck’. Golden Adagio’s win was the biggest upset of the opening day’s races of the winter season. True Diamond, a front runner till the last 100 metres finished third.

J.Silvester schooled Odalis (Hymn-Sublimely Single) was the first from the new crop to register a win. Jockey Lakshmikant had an easy rider on Odalis beating the rest by a comfortable margin. Sitting Pretty, Snow Bird and Arlington filled the frame while the favourite Enamour finished off the board.
