Trainer M V Narayana Rao leading Canadian Girl (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Bhagyanagar Cup

Jockey P.S.Chouhan continued to dominate at Malakpet, riding home three winners on Monday. His wins came through Canadian Girl, Cannon Gem and Sheer Genius. M.V.Narayana Rao trained Canadian Girl (Tirol-Canadian Fame) swamped the opposition in the Bhagyanagar Cup, a seven furlongs race for horses in category III.

A slow starter in her last two runs, Canadian Girl took a level jump and was up with the pace till taking the final turn. Carson Troy, Art Connoisseur, Canadian Girl and Fopping were almost in a line as they entered the straight and the ‘Girl’ responded gamely to Chouhan’s forceful riding and moved away from the rest near the distance marker.

Art Connoisseur finished second while the race favourite Tico Tico rallied along the rails to take the third spot ahead of Fopping.

It was a ‘Sheer Genius’ performance by R.H.Sequeira’s youngster in the Bhavnagar late. The six furlongs sprint for two year olds attracted seven runners and four of them had hit the target in their first attempt. Sheer Genius (Gaswar-Carrera) was on debut and the manner in which he trounced the opposition speaks high of his potential and a bright future is definitely on cards for the son of Gaswar. Racing behind Odalis and Montpelier till the last 300 metres, Sheer Genius moved with ease to win by a widening margin of nine lengths.

The first of the three wins for Chouhan was on J.Silvester trained Cannon Gem (Sussex-Ingenuity), in the higher division of the King Rama Plate. The four year old who had never won a race in 22 outings was backed to favouritism ahead of her eight rivals. Chouhan set out on a start to finish bid on Silvester’s filly and accomplished his mission with ease. Adonia took the second spot.

The lower division was won by L.D’Silva’s Proud Moment (Inhabitant-Ride With Pride), who was also winning for the first time. King In The Sky had surged clear by almost four lengths on top of the straight and Proud Moment charged forward to diminish the lead and get the better inside the last 100 metres.

Laxman Singh schooled Golden Queen (Ikhtyar-Killamey) made it a no contest in the 2200 metres Mica Empress Cup, the opening race of the day. Deep Shanker rode a pillar to post victory with Vijay Monarch in a vain chase in the last 600 metres.

D.Netto’s Euphonic (Midtown-Alfas Dream) turned out to be a gutsy winner in the higher division of the Ming Dynasty Plate. Imran Khan held Euphonic along the rails till the final bend and moved up strongly from the outside to challenge Kohinoor Fighter. The two fought a hard battle and Euphonic who was travelling the better all through moved ahead by a length, close to the winning post.

M.Sathyanarayana’s Speed Striker (Hymn-Slam Striker) was back on the race track exactly after a year. The 3 year old had raced only once last winter and was not in training following a set back. Vivek took Speed Striker to the front within the first furlong of the six furlongs trip and led all the way to the winning post. Price Warrior was in futile chase throughout the race.

T.Srinaggesh’s Twentyfive Pips (Young Senor-Okati Okati Okati) scored a win at longer odds, in the lower division of the Rainbows For Life Plate. Jockey R.Umesh who replaced an indisposed Nitin Singh held back Twentyfive Pips in second last position till approaching the final bend but never left the rails. On taking the turn Umesh made a swift

move to get his mount at a striking distance behind Craven Cottage and Airborne Magic. Twentyfive Pips galloped resolutely when shown the daylights on the straight and flashed past to win from the late finishing Stylish Chieftan. Qinghuangdao and Sanjaa filled the frame.

Westminister (Epicentre-Sabakh), a consistent performer from Ananth Vatsalya’s yard rapped up the higher division. Jockey Ajit Kumar improved Westminister in a hurry, moving around the field as they raced past the 800 m marker to join Young Sapper in front by the time they straightened for the final run. After a brief duel Westminister went ahead of Young Sapper and held on from the fast finishing Drayton.
