Trainer P C Tejaswi leading Zanzara (B Sreekanth up) winner of The Hyderabad Race Club Gold Trophy

There was high drama during the second race at Mysore today. The race was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. but there seemed to be an abnormal delay in the start although all the 11 runners had reached the starting gates. It was learnt that jockey Melvyn Maseyk, who was to ride the bottom-weighted Favourite, had a peculiar problem. He had set a pre-condition that the blinkers be removed from the filly for him to go out and ride her. Such a pre-condition being set by a professional after accepting to ride has been unheard of and the stewards decided to permit Favourite to be withdrawn. Melvyn is reported to have been pulled up by the Stewards for holding the Race Club to ransom.

The race was finally started with a reduced field of ten but there was more drama to follow. Pratap Kamath’s Aerial Acrobat went into the race an overwhelming favourite and the filly looked a winner 100 metres from home, enjoying a four-length lead over her nearest rival Miss International. Jockey M.A. Milan, who is back recently after a forced holiday of two years, appeared totally complacent on the favourite and eased her up to such an extent that Miss International managed to snatch the race in the shadow of the winning post. The blemish was so blatant that the Stewards initiated an enquiry immediately into the running of the race and the riding of Milan in particular. This ultimately culminated in the race being declared ‘Null & Void’, thus avoiding a probable law and order problem at the race course.

Zanzara (Glory of Dancer-Anadem) has hit a purple patch at the fag end of his career. The eight-year-old gelding rocketed into the lead in the final furlong and a half, after racing in fifth early on and improving through the final straight to score an encore, in The Hyderabad Race Club Gold Trophy. Ashkan covered considerable ground in the last 400 metres, coming from way behind but found the winner too good and had to settle for the second place. The field of nine was reduced to eight with the withdrawal of Hurricane Bay but only seven took active part in the race as the course favourite Secret Pilgrim was planted at the start. Trainer P.C. Tejaswi brought out three winners from the stable, with jockey B. Sreekanth riding out two of them.

The other two successes for Tejaswi came through Magnifique in the opening race and Mine Games. Magnifique (Serious Spender-Zerbilla) was ridden to a start-to-finish victory by B. Sreekanth in The Heggadadevanakote Plate. The favourite Spanish Crown was jostled for room early on and raced second last till 400 metres out, from where the jockey started to ride out but the winner had quickened by then to register an impressive win. True Force was withdrawn before the race.

Mine Games (Ajaad-White Plains) was given a tactical ride by Ravinder Singh to land the spoils in The Ranibennur Plate. The favourite Wimbledon Star led early and kept the tempo till the final furlong but buckled under pressure when Mine Games posed a strong challenge. Mine Games travelled close to the inner rails till the final bend and made a quick move to get to a striking position behind the leader Wimbledon Star, before surging clear inside the last 200 metres. Visual Element rallied on late to deny Wimbledon Star a second place. Star News was withdrawn before the race.

The 3-year-old Lad Lady (Razeen-Tarnished Lady), trained by Zareer Darashah, showed a lot promise en-route to her victory in The Takshashila Plate. Lad Lady, ridden by Ladjadj Stephane, was held back in third, along the rails till entering the final straight and the daughter of Razeen produced an impressive gallop to get past the front-running Easy. The win of Lad Lady was far more impressive than what could meet the eye and she is bound to prove her worth in bigger races in future. Fast Colours was withdrawn before the race.

Harish Rathod rode Ranjeet Shinde’s Hidden Pleasures (Tirol-Final Cut) to victory in the lower division of The Balamuri Plate, named after a popular tourist spot along the banks of river Cauvery near Mysore. Sunshower led till the final bend and started to drift out alarmingly on the final straight thereby losing all her chances in the race. Hidden Pleasures slipped along the rails and went past the winning post a clear three parts of a length in front of Noname. Sunshower finished third.

The higher division was won by Vishal Yadav’s Wynn (Placerville-Fair Always), who was ridden start to finish by Melvyn Maseyk. Wynn managed to stay ahead and win the race despite drifting out alarmingly on the final straight and finishing almost on the stand side. Snap Dragon was beaten to third place by Nice Guy close home.
