Trainer R H Sequeira leading Rising Rays (K Anil Up), winner of The Prince of Berar Trophy Div-I

Railer Hilton Sequeira is one who is riding high on success this Monsoon at Hyderabad. A product of Hyderabad Race Club Jockey’s School, Sequeira had ridden about 160 winners before he set sail to England and Ireland for his lessons in training. Having toiled for seven years there, he is back to where his roots are. With a small string of 15 horses, he has already had ten winners in his first season as a trainer.

Hilton’s wards, Rising Rays and Ultra Violet Ray won the higher and lower division of the Prince of Berar Trophy respectively. Both the winners were ridden by K. Anil. Power Ranger was in serious contention in the higher division, closely followed by One In All. Entering the last 300 metres, One In All took charge but Rising Rays (Don Micheletto – Raj Shahi) came up with a sustained run and emerged clear.

In the lower division, Girl of Love was quick to go to the front but packed up early on the straight. Ultra Violet Ray (Case Law – Peak Of Danger) shot through the field and won the race convincingly with Al Jadeed, Phar Lap and Girl of Love filling the frame.

Leo D’Silva finally came out of the lean patch, leading in three winners, Star Experience, Rio Grande and Star of Hyderabad. Star Experience (Ontario – Pledge), who had remained a maiden after seven outings, finally put in a gritty performance to topple the favourite, Iceland, in the lower division of the Adilabad Plate. Sighted in about eighth position as the field approached the final turn, Star Experience improved to put up a strong challenge and although Iceland started to drift out, he got the better by three fourths of a length.

Rio Grande (Ontario – Sexy Gal) galloped in front from the start, to lift the Tanasha Plate. Deepanjali improved towards the closing stages of the race to finish second ahead of Aadya Aadya Aadya and Queen Of Court in a three-way finish for the minor placing. Jockey Ch. K. Chary, who had ridden Star Experience earlier, completed a double with this win.

Star of Hyderabad (Epicentre – Red Crescent) started to drift out on odds towards race time, in the higher division of the Show The Way Plate but that did not have any bearing in her running as she charged at Lord Nelson to lift the race. Green Gift, who winded up as the firm favourite, looked to be struggling along the rails to finish third.

Srinagesh-trained Chayanandan (Eljohar – Mama Mia) stunned everyone with a start-to-finish win in the lower division. Sanjaa, who was backed to the exclusion of her rivals, jumped out lethargically from the gates and took with her tons of money. With already an enquiry opened into the running and riding of Sanjaa in race No. 84, where she finished second, the running in this race is even more intriguing.

The betting action in the higher division of the Adiladabad Plate resolved around two horses, Zarina and Crown Castle. After jumping out well, Crown Castle (Epicentre – Ice Castle) shot into the lead, held forte along the inner rails and finally stepped up momentum to stay ahead of the late finishing Zarina.

M.V. Narayana Rao’s ward, Canadian Girl (Tirol – Canadian Fame) produced a gutsy run to streak up to Ace High and win the opening race of the day, the Esquire Plate.

While L. D'Silva recorded a treble, trainer R.H. Sequeira, jockeys Ch. K. Chary and K. Anil scored a double each.
