One Magic Moment claim the Stewards Cup

By Chris Hoover | 19 Jun 2004 | BANGALORE

One Magic Moment (Shroff up) winner of the Stewards Cup being led by trainer Mr. Padmanabhan & owner Ms. Niti Merchant

S Padmanabhan trainee One Magic Moment had to be hard ridden by Pesi Shroff while overhauling the consistent performer Soviet Bay from Irfan Ghatala’s yard, to take the Stewards Cup, that featured Saturday’s races at the Bangalore Turf Club. Appu piloted Storm The Fort, who had a hampered passage, finished a game third.

This race turned out to be controversial as there were a couple of inquiries opened by the Stewards against the riders of Soviet Bay and the M.B. Mangalorkar trained Solar Rocket.

Apprentice jockey, Gipson Moses was held guilty of incompetent riding as the officials felt that he sat on the seven-year-old Soviet Bay till the last 100 metres and started pushing only when Shroff had One Magic Moment on its quarters. After viewing the race again, the Stewards decided to give the benefit of the doubt to the apprentice jockey.

Jockey Prithviraj, the rider of Solar Rocket, which had finished a late finishing second to Orion in its previous run, was pulled up for the manner of his running and riding of his mount. He too got away with a paltry fine of Rs 3,000 for violently shifting towards the inside for no apparent reason. Prithviraj had reported that his horse was hanging in, but the the Chief Veternary Officer differed as he reported no abnormility in the horse when it was examined.

The opening event saw rank outsider Enduring Freedom provide trainer, Samar Singh with a winning comeback after a suspension. Having shifted stables from S. Padmanabhan, this five-year old gelding pulled off a coup in its second run under its new trainer. Pradeep trainee Fire’s Dew finished second, ahead of Generation Next. Imran Chisty, the rider of the joint favourite Dr Pepper has been suspended from June 30 to July 7, for indifferent riding on his mount.

Jockey Suraj Narredu scored a double with similar tactics on both his mounts. Taking the Darashah-trained Buddy on a successful start to finish mission in the Bukit Timah Plate, Suraj repeated the feat on Padmanabhan trained Ranier to stake a claim for the Tippu Sultan Cup. Ranier, with this impressive victory is expected to move up in rating and will be the horse to follow. The other two serious contenders Divine Diamond and Anzello were left behind to fight for the minor places.

Randsberg (Alnasr Alwasheek-Mystic Memory) which had won a 1,400 metre race in his first start this season, went down to Dr M.A.M. Ramaswamy’s Southern Regent in the Nawab Sultan Ali Khan Memorial Plate run over 2000 metres. Suraj who rode the favourite and finished second, tried to reverse the verdict in the Stewards room, but his objection was over ruled and rightly so. Suraj had objected against the winner for tightening and bumping him in the last 300 metres. The trespass was not serious enough to effect the outcome of the race as the Ganapathy trained Southern Regent, looked superior. Perfect Mover (Srinath up) finished third ahead of Yogender Singh piloted Mayflower. Frenchman David Badel, astride Ponte Romano, was severely reprimanded and fined Rs 5,000 by the Stipendary Stewards for his improper behaviour with his co-professional. Apparently, Badel had an altercation and got physical with apprentice Yogender Singh, the rider of Mayflower who had repeatedly checked Ponte Romano in the race.

Trainer Zareer Darashah completed a double when Missident (Diffident-Shaandaa) justified the faith reposed in her with a resolute victory in the Camineto Plate over a 1,100 metre trip. Ponnappa-schooled Syrian Spice was impressive while finishing second. This filly could be a strong contender in its next run.

Baira and Candragupta provided trainer N.A. Ponnappa also with a double. The former won well under the handling of jockey Rajesh, while the latter decimated her seven rivals in a significant manner. Roda Rosen finished an impressive second ahead of Settle The Score.
