San Ramon (Placerville-Sorrento Steel) from the stables of L.D’Silva seems to be going from strength to strength, completing a hat-trick, in the K. Mahipathi Rao Memorial Million, a terms race for 3 year old horses. The youngster was a maiden when he arrived in Bangalore this summer and he got his first win there. Back at Malakpet, San Ramon won a seven furlongs race and now displayed his prowess, while dictating terms in the Million.

San Ramon found himself in second last position in a field of six runners early in the race and the rider had to give two cracks to keep the gelding in stride. On entering the straight, Any Given Time and Strides of Glory were up in front and San Ramon steered in Between the two in front and produced tremendous acceleration, to draw clear. Strides of Glory and Any Given Time finished second and third respectively.

There was a mild shower as the ten runners started off in the Independence Cup, a seven furlongs trip for horses in the highest category. The conditions were not a hindrance to Machiavellianism (Jazil-Empress Jessie), who won the race without being extended. Napoleon was up in front from the start, tracked closely by Arrow in Auto Mode while Machiavellianism was settled in about fifth position. Inside the last two furlongs, P.S.Chouhan on Deshmukh’s ward had to just guide the fellow and the winner was sighted a long way from home. Alexander Square, Greek Fire and Napoleon filled the frame in that order.

Another youngster from D’Silva’s yard, Classic Emerald (Royal Kingdom-All Dancing) won the lower division of the Treasure Wind Plate, the opening race of the day.  Dakshayani was on a start to finish bid, coming into the home stretch with a lead of almost three lengths over the nearest rival, while Classic Emerald was in third. Approaching the distance post Dakshayani lost steam and under strong urgings by P.S.Chouhan, Classic Emerald picked up momentum to whiz past and win. Valley Crossing and Lioness Heart dead heated for the second place.

K.Satheesh trained Ice Rain (Hurricane State-Arduous) won the Tenacity Cup beating its nine rivals with a measure of comfort. On entering the final straight, Ponte Verdi and Staccato were together in front and after a short distance the first named dropped out of contention. Ice Rain, who was in third waited till the last 200 metres and swooped on Staccato effortlessly. The favourite Bound For Glory failed to live up to its billing and ended up a tame fourth behind Ponte Verdi.

M.V.Narayana Rao’s Jewel In The Crown (Dancing Beggar-Rakaia), who had failed to show form during winter, got back to winning ways, in the higher division of the Classic Jewel Plate. Jewel In The Crown and Indian Epic started to make a move at the same juncture, on entering the home stretch and the two fought out the last 350 metres. Jewel in The Crown surged ahead by half a length from Indian Epic at the finish. The favourite Ruffiano started to close up late but could only finish third.

There was some action in the lower division, the second race of the day. The field was dispatched once and a false start was declared. The horses were stopped before crossing the front barrier and they were loaded again for a restart. Daniella was fractious and was withdrawn before the start. M.Sathyanarayan trained Dream Deal (Placerville-Desert Lighting) set off in front, from the start and once on the straight, started to kick on easily. The rest of the field preferred to follow the leader with Kuchipudi ending up a long way back second, in front of Fearless Mission and Winning Strides.

While corrective steps were taken by the starter after noticing a false start in the second race, he probably failed to notice that the rider of Skander in draw number nine was still standing on the works of the gates and not ready for a start, in the last race of the day. The start was given and Skander jumped out rider less. The stewards also probably failed to notice the anomaly and ‘All Clear’ was announced. Brahmani covered ground rapidly to fly past Gold Medal and Ziv, who were involved in a strong duel in front. Bold Reason moved late to finish third, ahead of Ziv.
