Camelot’s dreams to bag the Triple Crown was shattered by Godolphine's outsider Encke in the G1 Ladbrokes St.Leger Stakes at Doncaster.  The sell out crowd in Doncaster waited to witness history being made but were in for a shock when Camelot's efforts to collar Ecnke in the last furlong failed and Ballydoyle's hero could only diminish the margin to 3/4 of a length. "He ran a great race, but just got beat," said Aidan O’Brien, trainer of Camelot who finished second to Encke. "It's disappointing for everybody, but that's racing. It wasn't what we thought it was going to be--it was a steadily run race and he just stayed on rather than quickened."

Kingmambo’s Ecnke, ridden by Mickael Barzalona was held up in mid field early and started to make headway to be a handy fourth 3 furlongs out. Within the last furlong Ecnke went ahead to lead and
surged three lengths clear. Camelot was switched right 2 furlongs out to come out of the packed field and worked hard to close the gap towards the finish but Encke held on well in front.

"He's a tough horse and kept going. Mickael always liked him and said he had the class," said the winning trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni. Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford said: "This might not be the most popular win on Town Moor today but from our point of view it's fantastic. It's our sixth Ladbrokes St Leger. We are absolutely delighted with the horse and Mickael Barzalona gave him a superb ride. When he kicked at the two pole he put the race to bed."
