Green Moon winner of The Melbourne Cup

Montjeu’s Green Moon, trained by Robert Hickmott, came up with a startling run down the straight at Flemington race track, to lift the 2012 edition of the G1 Melbourne Cup, which is a dream of every man in the business. Positioned prominently on the inside, Green Moon travelled well behind the leaders for a major past of the 3200 metres gruelling trip. Nearing the last two furlongs, Green Moon was switched out and ridden to challenge by Australian born and Honk Kong based jockey Brett Prebble.  Green Moon got into a stanch gallop to be in front with a furlong left and stayed on well, to win by a length. Fiorente and Jakkalberry closed ground late to finish second and third respectively.

"He was never going to get beat," said Brett immediately after the race. "It's the pinnacle of racing in Australia. I've had some great highs here, but you don't get any higher than reaching the pinnacle. It's very emotional and it's going to last for a long time." Green Moon is owned by Australian property developers Lloyd Williams.

His son Nick Williams was there to lead in their fourth victor in the race. “I’m just ecstatic” said Nick, “It's another Melbourne Cup win for 'Team Williams'. We've put a lot of money in and a hell of a lot of effort so to get this result is terrific."
