California Memory by Highest Honor earned a place in history by being the first horse to succesfully defend its title in the G1Longines Hong Kong Cup. Tony Cruz trained California Memory was the 9/4 favourite for the 2000 metres G1 trip. Jockey Matthew Chadwick settled California Memory in third, close behind the leaders Don Excel and Feuerblitz. Racing into the final two furlongs, California Memory was switched out and ran on to surge clear. Giofra was closing in, towards the closing stages but the winner was well clear, going past the winning post a length ahead with more on hand. Alcopop was third another length and three quarters adrift.

"He showed great acceleration, and showed his authority today," said trainer Tony Cruz, a former champion jockey in Hong Kong who trained the legendary Silent Witness to a pair of wins in the Hong Kong Sprint. "When he quickened, Matthew said he put everyone to bed. And then he started to idle in front, and the horse started thinking 'where is everybody?' But when they started to come back to him, he thought 'I'd better go a bit faster again.'"
