Trainer L.V.R.Deshmukh was probably the happiest man at Malakpet on Sunday. The agony of being the Runner-up in thirteen Derbies finally ended for Deshmukh, with Tintinnabulation (Intikhab-Tourmalet) breaking the ice in the Deccan Bookmakers Golconda Derby Stakes – Grade I. This was also the first Derby victory for the ‘Pink, Red Stars’ silks, of Late Mr. Pratap Chander Reddy. “It’s a dream come true” said an exulted Deshmukh, speaking to India Race after the race. “I am absolutely over the moon after this victory and I wish to express my gratitude to my owners who have been always been supportive to me”, he added.

Tintinnabulation’s victory gave Hazara Stud a Derby double over the weekend. Red Baron had carried the Hazara flag to a splendid win in the Bangalore Derby on Saturday. Hazara Stud has been striking regularly in recent times and all the hard labour put in by Mr.Nirmal Singh and his team at the farm is beginning to pay dividends.

Tintinnabulation’s stable companion, Vijays Champ, did the job of setting the pace to the hilt, hitting the front very early in the race and setting a good pace. Shivalik Star was in second, followed by Storm Tracker, Angel Crown, Tintinnabulation, Manyatta, Ratham, San Ramon, Chiron and Perfect in that order. Passing the last 800 metres board, Vijays Champ stepped up the pace to build eight lengths lead over the nearest horse. Jockey P.S.Chouhan took the cue at that stage and started to make headway to be at a striking position as the field entered the home stretch. Inside the last furlong, Chouhan urged Tintinnabulation to get into action and the son of Intikhab accelerated resolutely, to move forward and draw away from the field. Vijays Champ kept the tempo on, to finish a credible second. Angel Crown and Manyatta finished third and fourth respectively.

“I am very happy to have given my favourite ‘colours’ and my trainer Mr. Vittal Deshmukh their first Derby triumph. I had missed on a number of occasions (for them) in Derbies earlier and that was always haunting me”, said Chouhan. “I am now relieved to have broken the ‘jinx’, he added. Talking about the horse, he said that he always believed Tintinnabulation was of a classic type and he showed that by trouncing the field in the race.
