BREEDERS CUP 2013 – SATURDAY
By Anil Mukhi | 01 Nov 2013 |
-
Yesterday's piece covered the card for Friday's racing at the 2013 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita in Arcadia, California, a suburban municipality in Los Angeles County, USA.
Today's piece examines the card for Saturday, November 2nd, which is the concluding – and more exciting – day of the weekend carnival. Racing is so competitive that not a single runner is quoted in advance at odds on – the shortest price being "Evens" on Wise Dan. This is as it should be. Last year the average winning odds on this very day were 8.3 to 1 and only 3 favourites obliged in 8 Breeders' Cup events.
Note that IST is 12-1/2 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). "PP" stands for Post Position and represents both the card no. and draw no. Odds refer to pre-race forecasts by experienced assessors and can change dramatically by post time depending on the wagering.

9 | SWEET REASON | Leah Gyarmati | Alex Solis | 5-2 | |
10 | SHE'S A TIGER | Jeff Bonde | Gary Stevens | 6-1 |
Sweet Reason (by Street Sense) looked the pick of the juvenile fillies in the USA when recording a pair of facile victories at the upscale Saratoga meet. Her balloon was somewhat deflated by the enormous Artemis Agrotera (by Roman Ruler), who re-opposes here, in the Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park. The pair faces the more experienced She's A Tiger (by Tale Of The Cat), who with Gary Stevens up will have every chance. There is nothing on form between the last-named and Secret Compass (by Discreet Cat) and it is from this quartet that the winner will emerge.

3 | TIZ FLIRTATIOUS | Marty Jones | Julien Leparoux | 7-2 |
4 | ALTERITE | Chad Brown | John Velazquez | 10-1 |
5 | LADY OF SHAMROCK | John Sadler | Victor Espinoza | 20-1 |
6 | MARKETING MIX | Tom Proctor | Gary Stevens | 7-2 |

9 | QUSHCHI | Graham Motion | Edgar Prado | 20-1 |
10 | KITTEN'S DUMPLINGS | Mike Maker | Joel Rosario | 10-1 |
Neither Sir Michael Stoute nor Andre Fabre would have sent their wards so far unless they had a decent chance at landing the spoils. Dank (by Dansili), beaten only once this year, already has American experience, having taken the Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes by open lengths earlier this term. Other consistent rivals include Laughing (by Dansili), unbeaten in 4 efforts this season which included a win over Tannery, who franked the form in the Gr.1 E.P. Taylor Stakes in Canada last week, Tiz Flirtatious (by Tizbud), whose 2013 tally is 4-from-5 and Marketing Mix (by Medaglia d'Oro), runner-up in 2012.

11 | GROUPIE DOLL | Buff Bradley | Rajiv Maragh | 6-2 |
12 | SWEET LULU | Jerry Hollendorfer | Julien Leparoux | 8-1 |
Last year's heroine – the only odds-on winner of any of the Breeders Cup races at the 2012 meeting – Groupie Doll (by Bowman's Band) got a rude shock when beaten last time out, although the fact that she was on Polytrack might have worked to her disadvantage. Her 2013 campaign has been short – 1 win from 3 starts – and though she looks the best on form, she just could be vulnerable to the likes of Book Review (by Giant's Causeway), Dance To Bristol (by Speightstown), Judy The Beauty (by Ghostzapper) – who beat her last time they met – and Sweet Lulu (by Mr. Greeley).

12 | MIZDIRECTION | Mike Puype | Mike Smith | 4-1 |
13 | DIMENSION | Conor Murphy | David Moran | 12-1 |
14 | UNBRIDLED'S NOTE | Steve Asmussen | Corey Nakatani | 8-1 |
Another attempting to repeat is Mizdirection (by Mizzen Mast), but her getting drawn wide, out with the washing, in 12 might impact her chances. That said, she is 5-for-5 on the unique Santa Anita 6.5 furlongs turf course and although not seen since failing over a yielding Belmont track in June is ready and primed. She faces the same rivals who placed behind her last year, Unbridled's Note (by Unbridled's Song) and Reneesgotzip (by City Zip), the last-named being in scintillating form. Capo Bastone (by Street Boss) is being switched to turf for the first time, a daring experiment on such a big stage.

13 | HAVANA | Todd Pletcher | John Velazquez | 5-1 |
14 | STRONG MANDATE | D. Wayne Lukas | Joel Rosario | 6-1 |
Almost every year, trainer Todd Pletcher has a high-class juvenile primed for this event and this year is no exception. Attempting to replicate last year's victory for the Coolmore/Pletcher/Velasquez combine, which came through Shanghai Bobby, is Havana (by Dunkirk) but he has drawn the awkward 13 hole in the starting gate. Local hope Bond Holder (by Mineshaft), with his late running style, can exploit any chinks in the favourite's armour. As Strong Mandate's schooler is the most successful in Breeders' Cup history, it's worth keeping the son of Tiznow in mind as well.

10 | BIG BLUE KITTEN | Chad Brown | Joe Bravo | 6-1 |
11 | MAGICIAN | Aidan O'Brien | Ryan Moore | 8-1 |
12 | REAL SOLUTION | Chad Brown | Javier Castellano | 8-1 |
If there is a "good thing" at this year's meeting, it is The Fugue (by Dansili) in this race for which she has been carefully targeted. Of course sometimes good things can get beat but logically it could only be tactical issues or a nightmare trip that would compromise her chances here. Point Of Entry (by Dynaformer) is returning after an enforced absence of 147 days caused by a fracture and shapes as the principal opposition to Lord Andrew Lloyd Weber's filly. And one can ignore only at one's own peril anything ridden by Gary Stevens here – and that happens in this case to be the Argentine ace, Indy Point (by Indygo Shiner). Ultra-consistent Big Blue Kitten (by Kitten's Joy) can add spice to the finish.

11 | TRINNIBERG | Shivananda Parbooh | Rajiv Maragh | 8-1 |
12 | LAUGH TRACK | Mark Casse | Mike Smith | 20-1 |
Last year's one-two – Trinniberg and The Lumber Guy – are back for another clash but neither is in the same form as in 2012. Formerly trained in Panama, Private Zone (by Macho Uno) has been second at all his three starts on the Santa Anita track and bids to go one better. He, and the horse he beat in the Vosburgh Stakes last time out, Justin Phillip (by First Samurai) are in great heart and should be in the leading group from the start. Missing in action for 18 months with a sesamoid injury, Secret Circle (by Eddington) returned successfully last month, has been working well, and should be right there.

10 | ZA APPROVAL | Christophe Clement | Joel Rosario | 15-1 |
Who's going to beat Wise Dan (by Wiseman's Ferry), America's best racehorse? Although he was defeated last time out, his loss had all to do with the fact that the race was moved off the grass on to Polytrack due to rain. On his preferred fast going, as he will encounter here, he is an awesome beast. Perhaps the only runner who has displayed ability somewhere in the same ballpark is Olympic Glory (by Choisir), fresh off a big win in England following the application of blinkers. Finally, that colt's paternal half-brother, Obviously (also by Choisir), is another that should be motoring at the finish.

The grand finale to the $25 million carnival comes with the Classic, in which 11 are left following the late defection of Ron The Greek due to a quarter crack. Last year's winner, Fort Larned (by E Dubai) is back and in good nick, but perhaps he was a bit lucky to beat Mucho Macho Man (by Macho Uno) in 2012, and that five-year-old is itching to take revenge. Neither might be able to handle Game On Dude (by Awesome Again) who has not lost in 6 tries since he botched his effort in last year's event. Aidan O'Brien has a modest record (7 wins from 83 starters) at the Breeders' Cup but has boldly pitched in turf star Declaration Of War (by War Front) on the dirt and it would be fitting to see such enterprise rewarded.
