Trainer Bob Baffert earned his first win at this year’s Breeders’ Cup meeting when his ward New Year’s Day produced a sensational gallop along the rail in the final furlong to win the G1 Juvenile.

The favourite Havana chased the leaders early and moved steadily to be second 3 furlongs out. He was ridden out by Gary Stevens to lead with a furlong left after battling it out with Strong Mandate and was looking good when New Year’s Day came tearing down along the rail and won going away. Havana finished second and Strong Mandate was third.

Jockey Martin Garcia who rode his first Breeders’ Cup win said, "My horse doesn't have that much pace. I was exactly where I wanted to be - I saved ground at every corner. The rail was open and I took it. I didn't panic. My horse was ready to start running.”

“Martin rode a terrific race on him. I told him to take advantage of the rail and he did and I'm glad he had a chance to shine on a day like this" said trainer Baffert.
