Mucho Macho Man lifted the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic in a thriller involving Will Take Charge and Declaration of War. Jockey Gary Stevens who is on a roll in his second stint, after a break in his career, at the age of 50, rode the winner for trainer Kathy Ritvo.

Mucho Macho Man settled well in midfield as Fort Larned and the favourite Game on Dude disputed the lead. Turning for home Mucho Macho Man loomed wide even as Game on Dude was being pushed to keep the lead. Gary Stevens took the ‘Macho Man’ to a clear lead on the straight but that started to minimize as Declaration of War came chasing. Will Take Charge came tearing down towards the closing stages to join the two in a thrilling finish. Mucho Macho Man had held on to its lead by a slim margin to win. Will Take Charge finished second, beating Declaration of War.

"I was in the perfect stalking position all the way. He got a little frisky with me coming into the stretch and I said hold on there boy. I love this horse," said an emotional Stevens.

"You just made an old man very happy," he said to the winning trainer, Kathy Ritvo, who incidentally was the first lady trainer to win this race.

"I am just so excited and very blessed to be here today," she said. "When Gary shook his stick I just thought we had it and he ran fantastic."
