Fiorente (Damien Oliver Up), winner of The Melbourne Cup (Gr.1)

Fiorente, the runner-up in the race last year, won the 2013 edition of the G1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington, Australia. This was the first Melbourne Cup success for Australia’s Hall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse. For jockey Damien Oliver it was the third ‘Cup’ triumph after Doriemus in 1995 and Media Puzzle in 2002.

"It's a dream come true," she said. "He's a pleasure to train. He's never disappointed us."

Fiorente, went into the race as the favourite at 6-1, in a packed field of 24 horses that took the start for the biggest race of the country. Racing a little behind mid-pack early in the 2 miles trip, Fiorente made steady headway to join the leaders as they approached the straight. Red Cadeaux in the meanwhile had challenged the leaders in the last 2 furlongs and forged ahead. Fiorente rallied strongly with jockey Damien Oliver bringing him on the wide outside and shook off Red Cadeaux with less than a furlong left from the finish to win by three parts of a length. Red Cadeaux finished second, with Mount Athos taking the third spot.
