Trainer Bipin V Salvi receiving The Gayatri Devi Memorial Cup from Mrs Keerthi Malini Devi

Bipin V Salvi trained Beyond Thankful (Gaswar-Ladyfeelgood / Chattari Stud) carried the battle beyond the track to be declared the winner in the Gayatri Devi Memorial Cup, the feature event of the ten races card at Mysore. Beyond Thankful with jockey Y.S.Srinath astride lost the race on the track, finishing second to the race favourite Precious Replica in a race that witnessed a ‘bumping match’ approaching the last 100 metres in which Artic Rose was also at the receiving end.

As the field of five showed up on the home stretch, Spark of Beauty was in front but quickly passed by Artic Rose. Precious Replica began to get stronger from the outside and Beyond Thankful was looking to forge ahead along the wide gap between the two. Precious Replica began to veer in towards the inside and the gap had narrowed down approaching the last 100 metres. Beyond Thankful who was hemmed up had to be checked and as a chain reaction was passed on to Artic Rose, rallying closest to the fence. The rider of Artic Rose was imbalanced and Ramu barely managed to hang on.

The two ‘aggrieved’ riders, A Ramu of Artic Rose and Srinath took the battle to the Stewards Room.  Jockey A Ramu lodged an objection both against Srinath and jockey Vivek of Precious Replica. Jockey Srinath took objection against Vivek for severe interference. A Stewards’ enquiry was also ordered into the running of the race. After sitting through the objection and the Stewards’ enquiry, the Stewards held that the objections taken by both Srinath and Ramu against Vivek held water and disqualified Precious Replica, the original winner. Beyond Thankful was declared the winner and Artic Rose moved up one place to be third.

Trainer S.Padmanabhan who saddled two runners, Aralyn and Torch Bearer on the day and both of them walked away with the winners’ trophies. Aralyn (Razeen-Alvarita / Usha Stud) justified the cramped odds in the D.H.Dasappa Memorial Trophy. The Razeen filly who had finished second behind Bold Majesty at Bangalore in her only start was sent off at 10-3 ‘on’ for the seven furlongs race. Lincon Continental and Allez Royale were ahead of the rest till the top of the straight with the favourite biding her time in about sixth position.  With 400 metres left from home Aralyn was pulled out by S.John to make a bid from the outside and the filly despite not maintaining a straight course forged ahead to win easily. Our Little Dragon was the only worthy challenger in the race, finishing second 1 ¼ lengths behind the winner. Allez Royale, finished third seven lengths adrift.

Torch Bearer (Burden of Proof-Running Flame / Kunigal Stud) won the Forester’s Trophy, a mile race for horses rated 40-65. Torch Bearer hit the front as they headed past the 1200 metres board. Into the final straight Queen moved alongside to challenge and Passing Fulcrum was getting stronger from the outside. With about a furlong left Passing Fulcrum moved closer and just when it looked that he would forge ahead, started to run erratic, drifting out of the straight course. By the time jockey John could get Passing Falcrum on even keel Y.S.Srinath had charged towards the winning post with Torch Bearer. Queen was a faraway third.

Warren Singh trained Manta Ray (Diffident-Zephyrella / Yeravada Stud) bounced back to score an impressive win in the division I of the Gool and Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy. Delilah led the field from the start with Jaanvi joining from the outside and Manta Ray close behind, between them. Approaching the last two furlongs Mantay Ray shot through the duo in front and was never in any sort of threat till the wire. Delilah stayed on to be second. Jet Set Go and Arziki filled the judge’s frame in that order.

Mumbai import Capri (Ace-Yutai / Poona Stud) made her first appearance on the Mysore race track a profitable one in the Setia Teknologi Trophy. Sent off as the favourite at 2-1, Capri got to the front and disputed the lead with Flying Tricolour till entering home stretch. Ohiyesa moved alongside with a strong challenge nearing the last 300 metres but Capri accelerated well to jockey A.Ramu’s urgings and moved away. Ohiyesa finished second while Scramouche took the third spot.

C.D.Monnappa trained Always on Top (Inner City-Maria Sharapova / Akal Sahai Stud Farm) laboured hard to justify the short price in the Bottolanda Cup. Castlebar set off on a start to finish bid and was relentless even as they came into the last 100 metres. Always on Top racing in about fifth till the home bend made his way through packed traffic on top of the straight and started to challenge Castlebar from the outside. Castlebar started to drift out of the straight course right through the last 150 metres and Always on Top managed to get his neck in front at the all-important end much to the relief of his supporters.  Spiritual Blue injured himself in the saddling area and was withdrawn.

Monnappa packed a back-to-back double through Society Music (Chevalier-Secret Paradise / Ruia Stud) in the Vasoo Group Trophy. Society Music burst into a sizzling gallop when it mattered most, pushing back the favourite Country’s Nobility to the second place. Approaching the last 300 metres on the straight Ace Princess was slightly ahead of Magic Wave and Country’s Nobility came with a good gallop to head past from the outside. Just when it the race looked to be well within Country’s Nobility came Society Music with a terrific turn of foot from behind and forged ahead to spare 1 ¾ lengths at the finish. Magic Wave was third two lengths away. Pipes of Peace was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.

Prasanna Kumar trained Hilton (Major Impact-Shiseido / Manjri Stud) won the opener of the day, the lower division of the R.M.Puttanna Memorial Trophy from pillar to post. The 6 year old bay gelding which had won only once in its career spanning over 32 starts headed towards the fence after jumping out and maintained a good leeway over the others. Into the home stretch Mister Grey and Musical Treasure tried to challenge from the outside but Hilton kicked on gamely under T.S.Jodha. Fashion Flame improved to finish second. Romans run came in late to finish in the money ahead of Musical Treasure.

V.Narayana Gowda trained Cute Beast (Mathematician-Ronkonkoma / Sans Craintes Stud) who had won her last start, pulled off an encore in the division of the R.M.Puttanna Memorial Trophy. The filly jumped out smartly from an outward draw and headed straight to the fence to lead the pack. Maintaining a good lead into the final run, Cute Beast kicked on gamely to win easily. Aqua Aria in her futile chase finished as the runner-up. Glamour Boy and Fermina filled the judge’s frame.

G.Nithyanand trained Cadogan (Key of Luck-Belladee / Kunigal Stud) who was winless from 16 starts found the Mysore track to his liking in the lower division of the Gool and Soli Memorial Trophy, the concluding race of the day. Lake Emerald tried start to finish tactics. Cadagon and Quarter Cask were almost together behind the leader with the rest further behind. Inside the straight Quarter Cask started to challenge from the outside but that effort was turning out to be futile. Cadagon got stronger between horses and with jockey V.R.Jagadeesh riding out surged ahead to score its maiden win by three quarters of a length. Quarter Cask finished on third.

For the professionals trainers S.Padmanabhan and C.D.Monnappa scored a double. Jockey S.John was the most successful among his tribe with a treble while Y.S.Srinath and A.Ramu scored a brace each. Jockey P.Kiran Rai completed risidi 40 winners and will not be entitled for any allowance in future. Jockey A.Ramu rode his 20 winners and the allowance entitle to him is now reduced to 2 kilograms.
