Christopher Soumillion piloted Katsuhiko Sumii trained Epiphaneia to a dominating win in the G1 Japan Cup. The two time champion Gentildonna who was looking to complete a hat-trick under Ryan Moore could only finish fourth. Tragedy struck in the race when the G1 Irish Derby winner Trading Leather had to be put to sleep after suffering ‘serious fracture’ in the race. “Trading Leather was much adored and had a tremendous career, the highlight being his Irish Derby win. His passing is tough for us all, especially my staff. This is a very sad loss,” commented trainer Jim Bolger on the untimely end of his ward.

Last year’s G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St.Leger) winner Epiphaneia raced keenly initially, tracking the leader on the inner. About two furlongs left from home the 4 year old son of Symboli Kris was angled out to challenge and was quickly in front. Epiphaneia stretched out majestically to extend the margin to four lengths at the finish from Just A Way.Spielberg finished third ahead of the favourite Gentildonna.

“It’s one of the most prestigious races in the world, and I’m a very lucky jockey right now,” said Soumillon. "When I asked him to go, he just hung a little to the rail then started to stride like an amazing horse - to be able to perform like that after making the race difficult on himself is just amazing on his part,” he added.
