COMMODORE OPENS ACCOUNT WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN

By Mahendra Mallya | 17 Mar 2016 | MUMBAI

Trainer P Shroff leading Commodore (P Trevor Up), winner of The P A D'avoine Trophy Div-1

Pesi Shroff trained Commodore (Danejhill Dancer – Antioquia, Manjri Stud) had showed in his last start that he would deliver the next time out and he did so in an impressive fashion. Easing to the front right at the start, Commodore ambled along with Flashing Honour and Jazzmyn on either side until they turned for home.

Once into the straight, jockey Trevor eased him into the lead and Commodore gradually stepped up the pace to finish off in style. Jazzmyn tried hard to stick alongside Commodore, but the latter was simply too good once in the final furlong. Commodore, didn’t exactly tear away, but paced ahead leisurely which speaks a lot about Trevor’s confidence in Commodore’s ability and the ease with which he applied himself to streak away at the business end of the straight.

Commodore outclassed this bunch of rivals and should be followed again. Jazzmyn has been consistent and finished a good second ahead of Grand Vitesse, who too has done well over the last few runs.

Trevor had earlier scored astride Atalya (Mull of Kintyre – City Tamer, Nanoli Stud). Trevor played the waiting game and had switched Atalya off for the major part of the journey. Up in front, Allegiance led them into the straight with favourite Devils Ride in close attendance. Devils Ride took charge past eh 400m mark, but then before he could relish the lead, Jester and Atalya both launched on to him. Atalya was travelling the best of the lot and drew away to post a facile victory. Jester did well to finish a good second and has the potential to improve and have his own day before long.

Bangalore based jockey Arshad Alam had his big day in Mumbai, riding with aplomb and scoring a well-backed double. His first was atop Geirangerfjord (Bushranger – Chamela Bay, Equus Stud). Although this Sanjay Kolse ward had no form coming into the race, strangely, the market trends showed that smart money was coming on the filly. True to the trend, Geirangerfjord obliged and how!

Jeena cut a steady pace leading from the early stages and did well to stay ahead for most of the journey, until beaten. Kaleidoscope trudged alongside Jeena on turning for home and even headed her briefly. Dancing Pretty too was warming up and joined the fight approaching the distance post. Geirangerfjord started to surge forward past the 400 and arrived with a flourish in the last 150 meters to speed past the fighting bunch and score an impressive victory. Jeena wrested back the second spot from Dancing Pretty and Kaleidoscope filled the frame. It was later announced that Kaleidoscope returned sore.

Maduro (Big Bd Bob – Plymsole, Hazara Stud) was the bold gamble from the stables of Sanjay Kolse and the well supported debutante was right up to the task. He was not in the picture when the heads turned for home, with favourite Monte Greco being cheered into the straight. Rock In Rio and Eternalinspiration were close behind the leader with Silver Shadow not too far behind. Rock In Rio got past Monte Greco and looked good at that juncture. Eternalinspiration was fighting hard to stay in contention. Arshad Alam set alight Maduro and the gelding responded with a fiery gallop to sail past them all and post a runaway win. Maduro was simply too good on the day and the rest paled in his presence. He is surely going to add to this one in the future.

The most fancied pair of Shivalik Heroine and Solange took a sound beating at the hands of Melinda (Dancing Forever – Superlative, Hazara Stud), who too had smart money coming on him at race time. Shivalik Heroine sped ahead to lead the field with Solange, Melinda and Cha Cha Cha in that order.

Shivalik Heroine caved in tamely when Melinda loomed up on the outside and the Katrak trained mare galloped away without encountering any resistance whatsoever. Shivalik Heroine ended a faraway second and Cha Cha Cha rendered Solange to the last position.

Owner Haresh Mehta won two races with different trainers and both were prime favorites. Sangramsingh Joshi saddled Fringe Benefit (Noverre – Distant Valley, Sohna Stud) ridden by apprentice Santosh was in third and he moved smoothly ahead on turning for home. He got past leaders Serene and Armel without difficulty and had to go another furlong when Generous Lady gave him a wakeup call. Both matched strides for a brief while, but Generous Lady failed to sustain. Fringe Benefit shook off the challenger and sailed away to win by a length.

Squash (Noverre – Impassion, Sohna Stud) enjoyed a much easier win. She was way behind in the six-furlong race when Rich N Rare turned for home and My Freedom came alongside to challenge. Squash, just like she did last time, arrived with a scorching gallop to zip past them all and sail away to score an impressive win, implying a hat-trick was not beyond her. She finished on with a terrific turn of foot to rattle her opponents and win by a margin. So Good had a good educative run and My Freedom too was sharper than before.

Draco (Phoenix Tower – Attune, Manjri Stud) kept his date with victory. Vision of Romance led them into the straight with Captain Abdon improving along. Draco moved up considerably and when he was given the signal, he stormed ahead to race away with a fast gallop. Cool Runnings came from behind, but was far too late to match the brilliance of Draco. Vision of Romance held on to earn place money.

Cezanne (Cockney Rebel – Blue Missy, Capricorn Stud) won the concluding event of the day with a late run and in a thrilling finish. Galloping on the wider outside, Cezanne arrived with a scintillating burst at just the right juncture to wallop the bunch of horses scrambling at the finish.

Niobrara and Star the ones to lead ‘m homewards faded away and it looked like Born to Win and Heart of the City were heading for a close finish.  Stateira joined th fight with a furlong to go and just then Cezanne, trained by AM Jadhav with Kishore Kadam aboard went for the kill and struck it rich just in time. Heart of the City and Stateira ended close behind.

For the professionals, trainer Sanjay Kolse saddled a double and jockeys Trevor, Arshad Alam and apprentice Santosh G scored a double each.
