SARVATRA BAGS ASAF JAH VII MEMORIAL TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 15 Oct 2018 | HYDERABAD

Trainer R H Sequeira leading Sarvatra (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of The Asaf Jah Vii Memorial Trophy

The small six-race card at Hyderabad panned out to be an enthralling day for the patrons with all the six races ending in close finishes. Sarvatra's one-length victory was the biggest margin and that speaks volumes of the tough competition right through the day. Racing was at it's thrilling best and fancied horses obliged in most races.

Sarvatra (Surfrider – Agility) won the Asaf Jah Vii Memorial Trophy, the feature event of the day. The 16/10 favourite trained by Sequeira was in fifth as heaven Can Wait led them into the straight with Sweetie Pie closing in on the leader.

Sweetie Pie led briefly as Digger quickened well to get past her; soon Sarvatra, with Akshay Kumar in the saddle, charged in with a good gallop and swooped up on the pair in front. Digger offered stiff resistance, but Sarvatra grew stronger at the finish to assert herself and seal her victory a stride or two from the winning post, eventually winning by a length from digger. Sweetie Pie held on to the third spot with Cymbal completing the frame.

Trainer K Sateesh was the lone pro to achieve a double on the day. He first sent out the well-backed Once More (Lord Admiral – Joriki) to an exciting win in the day's second race. Once More was not in the best of positions turning for home and had to skirt around horses, making her run on the centre of the track. Musashi meanwhile, went into the lead with Moka in chase and these two were fighting past the distance post when Once More started to inch closer. Once More, ridden by Nakhat Singh, gathered momentum just at the right time and finished on fastest to stick her head in front meters from the wire and made a final surge to clinch the issue with Musashi and Moka breathing down her neck. Wings of Eagles ran on to take the fourth spot.

Trainer Sateesh then saddled Meritocracy (Excellent Art – Mawaheb) who won in an exciting photo-finish.  While Meritocracy was up in the front-bunch led by Rahil, Bayrd was racing a bit too far from the action until the turn.

Rahil faded out surprisingly early as Meka's accelerated well soon on straightening up. Meritocracy was taking his time to gather momentum and jockey Koushik did his best to get him going. Meritocracy responded soon enough and started to wear Meka's down. Bayrd got going in the final furlong and arrived at a good clip, however, Meritocracy and Koushik managed to stay ahead at the wire and notch up a very close win. Bayrd was a touch too late but he beat Meka's comfortably to take the runner-up slot.

Laxman Singh trained Satin Symphony (China Visit – Five Satins) was the shortest priced runner of the day at half money, yet he too had to endure a stiff challenge to carve out a narrow victory.

Vijay's Harmony kicked on gamely after leading them into the straight. Satin Symphony moved right up to set about his chase. The rest were well away to make any impact on these two. Vijay's Harmony put up a spirited gallop and had Satin Symphony under pressure. Jockey Kuldeep Singh rode his heart out to tackle Vijay's Harmony and started to draw abreast inside the last 100 meters. The suspense grew with every stride and the large number of supporters of Satin Symphony heaved a sigh of relief as Satin Symphony made a last ditch effort and was able to pip the gritty Vijay's Harmony on the post in a very tight finish. Willow Glen ended third ahead of Solo Winner.

Dean's Girl (Dean's Kitten – Rossa Di Rugiada) set the trend for the close finishes for the day carving out a ‘neck' verdict in day's opener. The L D'Silva trained filly had good leeway to cover as Samba, leading right from the start was comfortably ahead as they turned for home. Dean's Girl improved positions to be second past the 400m mark, and then started to work her way closer to the leader. Samba kicked on maintaining about two lengths lead coming inside the final furlong. Dean's Girl started to draw closer with every stride and with the winning post approaching fast, the crowd was on the edge of their seats. Samba, after doing all the hard work, failed to sustain the momentum and Dean's Girl seized the opportunity and pegged Samba back in the nick of time to snatch victory close home. Favourite Amaravathi finished a tame third without troubling either the winner or the runner up.

Kohinoor Lucy (Epicentre – Golden Chain) provided a fitting finish to the day with yet another photo finish verdict in the last race of the day. Taking it up right from start, Kohinoor Lucy had a sizable lead coming into the homestretch. The Kishore trained filly was ably ridden by Naresh as he built on the lead and got the best out of Kohinoor Lucy. Even inside the final 200m it looked like Kohinoor Lucy would have it easy, but Hollister picked up speed in the last 100 meters and gave a scare to Kohinoor Lucy who just about managed to thwart the final explosion of Hollister to hold by a head at the wire. Royal Faith ran on to save place money.

For the professionals, trainer K Sateesh was the lone pro to score a double.
