Katrak Off to a Flying Start, Saddles Treble

Sea Ruler

C D Katrak has simply carried on from where he had left off. After winning the Pune Championship, he is now seeking a three-in-a-row this Mumbai Season where he is the ruling Champion trainer. His ward Star of Roses gave him a perfect start in the Rosmini Plate, the second race. Star of Roses (China Visit – Blue Ridge) impressed on his debut. Settling in the rear of the front bunch of four, Star of Roses tagged behind Ocean Clipper, Titleist and Ocean Storm. However, as they straightened for home, jockey James Doyle alerted Star of Roses who responded with a spirited gallop to surge ahead of the pair in front without encountering any resistance. Star of roses won by a widening margin and clocked just over the minute. Ocean Slipper got tightened by Titleist near the 300 and Jockey Chisty lodged an objection too, but the stewards didn’t feel it was too severe and overruled it. Ocean Star improved towards the finish to grab the runner up berth. Alchemist paid for a lethargic start and had a forgettable introduction to racing. Sea Ruler (E Dubai – Cool Ashlee) grabbed the day’s honours by smashing his opponents to pulp in his first appearance amongst a class II set. This was perhaps the colt’s best performance yet and a clear indication that he is maturing into a strong contender for the forthcoming Classics. Star Ruler’s essay was a delightful one in the Sir Rahimtoola Chinoy Trophy over a mile. Racing in the rear, Sea Ruler swooped upon front-runners The Giant and Forbes List without much ado, and darted forward effortlessly to win drawing away. He was galloping in great rhythm and long sooth strides and looked like one enjoying his assignment thoroughly. Michael Fenton could not have asked for a better debut on the Mahalaxmi Trophy. Sea Ruler became his first mount by default as his original first engagement – Starry Ocean in the second race was a non-starter. Flaming Arrow (Black Cash – Karla Wyller) finally came into his own and what he produced left his rivals gasping for breath. Flaming Arrow settled into the mid-bunch and was surrounded by horses all round. Neil McCullagh wisely kept him out of trouble as they turned for home. Once into the straight, Flaming Arrow was almost fighting with McCullagh to let go and when the jockey gave him the go, Flaming Arrow galloped resolutely to put the issue beyond doubt a long way from home. River Blitz had to come around horses and was the widest one into the straight. Tudor Regent did well to beg back Red Dragon and Walking Tall for the place money. Flaming Arrow should pick up another race this season. The RWITC.COM Trophy – the feature of the day, looked to go to the wire with the prominent horses huddled together entering the straight. At the distance post, Sine Qua Non (Royal Kingdom – Bonjour Tristesse) enjoyed a slender lead and had Sea Warrior and River Rule on his haunches with main threat Si Como No not too far behind and warming up. Neeraj Rawal got the Pesi ward going and although Si Como No made a sustained bid in the final furlong, Sine Qua Non proved too good to topple. Si Como No finished on well and indicated that a better performance and result was round the corner begging for an extra furlong to prove his might. River Rule and Autocrat had a good outing as well. Both the divisions of the A Campbell Trophy were claimed by horses with nourishing odds. In the first division, Arabian Champ (Major Impact – Freedom Cry) settled in the front alongside Alaska and Arbudh till the turn. Once into the straight, Arabian Champ soon took charge but had Solid Rock breathing down his neck. It was all hard work for the winner as Solid Rack never let Arabian Champ relax and Arabian Champ held on at the wire. Game of Power did well to earn place money. The tote favourite Top Action ended on the frame and must have sharpened himself with this run. In the second division it was the rand outsider Tattenhoe who produced a scintillating burst midway up the straight to snuff out any serious challenge from any of the fancied runners. Settling in the rear of the mid-bunch, Tattenhoe (Warrshan – Streak) improved to be in striking position at the turn. Chak De brought them in and retired. Always simply could not get going and finished off the frame. It was Red Cloud who improved dramatically, coming in from the last position in the straight, to almost nose out the winner. Red Cloud was last throughout and so at turn. He made his bid on the wide outside and warmed up in the final furlong. He flew towards the finish and got the winner a stride too late. Wings of Angels ran well to finish a good third and I would suggest Shodaan too is one for the notebook. Shodaan had to switch lanes and may have been at a slight disadvantage, but looks good for a shorter sprint. Oh Calcutta (Juniper – Fabulous Fortune) earned her maiden success and all the hard work she had to do was during her preparation; on the track she had it easy! Settling into the third soon on start, Oh Calcutta watched Glorious Miss shoot into a sizable lead. Into the straight, Glorious Miss was comfortably in front and jockey Srinath began to devour ground. Sensing that the leader was shifting out alarmingly, Srinath went for the rails and at the distance post had Glorious Miss covered. A couple of cracks did the trick and Oh Calcutta sailed into the lead to register a comfortable victory clear of the rest. Arabian Power and Step By Step completed the frame finishing close together. Bemisaal (Major Impact – Priceless Moments) must have thought that he had the popular duo comprising Hickory and Prime Time well covered but the surprise resistance came from Seen It All. Brave Gun, who led the field, went wide at the turn and Seen It All found himself in the front. Jockey Adrian Nicholls quickly got busy on Bemisaal and urged him forward. He steered clear of Prime Time. Hickory never raised a hope at any stage. Seen It All fought bravely right to the end but Nicholls proved to be a potent force and guided Bemisaal to a well-earned victory. Mention must be made of the late effort of The Right Man, who despite being in the rear put in a spirited final gallop to end close behind the first two, pegging back Prime Time in the process. The day’s first race was a cracker. The First Lady seemed to be well in control until the final few strides when Ashwa Prahar (Serious Spender – Sweet Moments) struck a telling blow. At the distance post, The First lady was heading to keep her date with victory. Soon Ashwa Prahar began to cover ground rapidly. A third challenge came from Honeyday who too came up with a fiery finishing gallop. At the wire, it was Ashwa Prahar who got the nod right.
