STAR SUPERIOR IS BACK AT HIS BEST

Trainer Rajesh Narredu leading Star Superior (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Krishnaraja Wadiyar Cup

After enjoying a fine run under the hot summer sun on Saturday, punters delivered a series of knock-out punches to the bookies, six very well backed favourites cruising home without a fuss including the half-money favourite Star Superior in the Krishnaraja Wadiyar Cup, the plum event run over a mile on Sunday.

The winner of  the Indian Derby was head and shoulders above his seven rivals and after his brilliant mock race, punters chose to go big on the Rajesh Narredu ward and were rewarded, Suraj Narredu partnering the champion dictating the pace before leaving his rivals for dead 300 metres from home. Star Superior is back at his best again and is poised to win a couple of more big plums this season. Watchmyscript finished a game second ahead of Prevalent Force from Darius Byramji's yard who impressed most after making a comeback after six months.

The first three events saw the favourites flying home to the delight of the railbirds. Here And Now from Neil Darashah's yard, who had dislodged jockey Trevor Patel at the start in his last start, proved too good in the Ich Dien Plate run over a distance of 2000 metres. The winner piloted by Suraj Narredu, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring won by more than 10 lengths and on the strength of this victory is certain to provide an encore. As expected last start winner Ice Speed gained the runner-up berth ahead of Extremely Dangerous while another last start top finisher Track Striker made the frame.

After her eye-catching effort in her last essay on the opening day, second behind Corona Del Corsa, Abira from Arjun Manglorkar's yard subjected to systematic preparation had improved most. The speedy filly garnered the maximum support despite the fact that Brothers In Arms from Neil's yard had a fair share of followers. Neeraj Rawal guiding the fortunes of the public choice sent Abira to the front the moment  the nine contestants came under the starter's flag for the His Majesty Plate run over a sprint and the daughter of Wind Legend showed a clean pair of heels detonating the opposition and romping home by more than 10 lengths in a smart time of 1:11.05 seconds. The superb time clocked by the filly, it is needless to mention satisfied her trainer most. Brothers In Arms finished second more than five lengths clear of Desert Combat while Mr Humble finished fourth.

Despite the fact that she was making an appearance after 11 long months, Anfia from trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard was backed heavily to score in the Aboline Plate run over a 1100M dash. The fact that the talented bred in the purple filly had beaten Wings Of Desire on debut provided the confidence to the followers of form who considered that enough to come out tops in this mediocre set. S John pushed the public choice to gain a favourable position at the top of the straight and the moment he reminded his mount of her task ahead, Anfia zoomed past the early leaders to win by more than five lengths. Now that everything is okay with Anfia, this Prasanna ward is certain to add a couple of more wins this season. Morrane Gabriella edged out She's Superb by the shortest of margins to finish second while Industrialist came home fourth.

The Neil Darashah schooled Sahara who lost a certain race thanks to the over confidence of Ryan Marshall in her last essay was again favoured to enter the winners' circle in the upper division of the Mystic Memory Plate run over a sprint. Air Command piloted by John and Baymax in the hands of apprentice jockey Abhay Singh too were also fancied. Air Command who had failed to justify favouritism in his last essay produced his best, John producing a neat copybook effort to register two back-to back wins. Sahara warmed up late to gain the runner-up berth while Baymax in his effort to make every post a winning one had to rest content with the third spot.

The principal added attraction, the Mayor's Cup was claimed by on-money favourite La Rondine from the stables of Vishal Gaikwad. Neeraj Rawal who guided home Abira to a fabulous victory earlier had it easy again on the overwhelming favourite. After tracking the leader Magistero and Psychic Force for most part of the mile long trip, Neeraj drove La Rondine to assume command at the distance post and put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Punjabi Girl finished on well to beat Magistero to follow La Rondine home while New Moon filled the frame.

Neil pulled off a good gamble on My Lexicon in the Xisca Plate. The winner piloted by apprentice jockey Nazer-Ul-Alam who in a hurry to get ahead swung his mount wide negotiating the final curve but since the winner was travelling well he hit the front before My Lexicon did the rest for Alam charging home i9n emphatic fashion to the delight of the Neil Darashah camp. Premier Premises finished second ahead of Savisa. Odyssey in this event was withdrawn, in no mood to get into the gates.

Another on-money favourite Multifaceted from Darius Byramji's yard helped punters sign-off in style winning the concluding event, the lower division of the Mystic Memory Plate in a common canter. Zervan took the (6/10) to the front from the word go and the race was over long way from home. Wings Of Desire finished second ahead of Bold Move while the topweighted Spanish Beauty partnered by John was never in the hunt.
